WASHINGTON Sen. John Cornyn today declared his opposition to a reckless, ill-advised intervention in Syria.
I cannot support an operation that is so poorly conceived, so foolishly telegraphed, and virtually guaranteed to fail, he said at the close of a 25-minute speech on the Senate floor.
Cornyn, the deputy GOP Senate leader, had signaled his disdain for the administrations plans in Syria. He also kept open the possibility he would support President Barack Obama, until now if he heard a sufficiently coherent and robust plan. He said Wednesday that Obamas speech last night fell short. He also said he would readily support a military operation that ensured Syrias chemical stockpile wont fall into the hands of al Qaeda or other terror groups; that includes decisive and overwhelming force and some element of surprise; and that was part of a broader, well-defined strategy that included the ouster of strongman Bashar al-Assad.
But, he said, that is not what Obama has proposed.
A halfhearted, ineffectual attack that leaves Assad in power would surely harm U.S. national security, Cornyn said, predicting a propaganda disaster.
`The worlds greatest military force took a shot at me and Im still here, Cornyn said, imagining the Syrian dictators spin after such a strike. `Im still in power. I won and America lost. Thats how I can see this backfiring in a very serious way, undermining US credibility.
