John Cornyn opposes Syria strike as “reckless, ill-advised intervention” (finally makes decision!)

WASHINGTON — Sen. John Cornyn today declared his opposition to a “reckless, ill-advised intervention” in Syria.

“I cannot support an operation that is so poorly conceived, so foolishly telegraphed, and virtually guaranteed to fail,” he said at the close of a 25-minute speech on the Senate floor.

Cornyn, the deputy GOP Senate leader, had signaled his disdain for the administration’s plans in Syria. He also kept open the possibility he would support President Barack Obama, until now — if he heard a sufficiently coherent and robust plan. He said Wednesday that Obama’s speech last night fell short. He also said he would readily support a military operation that ensured Syria’s chemical stockpile won’t fall into the hands of al Qaeda or other terror groups; that includes “decisive and overwhelming force” and some element of surprise; and that was part of a broader, well-defined strategy that included the ouster of strongman Bashar al-Assad.

But, he said, that is not what Obama has proposed.

“A halfhearted, ineffectual attack” that leaves Assad in power would surely harm U.S. national security, Cornyn said, predicting a “propaganda disaster.”

“`The world’s greatest military force took a shot at me and I’m still here,’” Cornyn said, imagining the Syrian dictator’s spin after such a strike. “`I’m still in power. I won and America lost.’ That’s how I can see this backfiring in a very serious way, undermining US credibility.”

McConnell and Cornyn think themselves clever by hanging back until the wind is fully blowing in a certain direction. But we need to be reminded that THESE ARE THE LEADERS IN THE SENATE!

Leaders stand on principle and move in that direction come hell or high water. But the two republican leaders in the senate are up for reelection next year, dontcha know!!

2014 can’t come soon enough.

I’m afraid anyone we replace would also be under enormous pressures.
Let’s hope they have ‘Chuck Norris’ balls.
