They may have felt really awkward after seeing how they ended up making total fools of themselves but the cringing by viewers is much more difficult to endure.

To my mind, Dan Quayle’s gaffe was pure media antagonism. As I understand it, it was the teacher who handed Mr. Quayle cards with the ‘correct’ spelling, but it became a case of Mark Twain’s axiom of the rumor going around the world while truth was just lacing its shoes! Putting myself in the VP’s shoes, what would I do, the very same thing, otherwise I am disregarding the teacher.
Of course the same thing happened to his boss, GHWB, at the demonstration of the grocery store scanner. OH, President Bush is so rich he has never shopped where there was a scanner, FALSE! New tech scanner that could read even messed up scan codes and the like. Pure Media Spin, and oh were they ever apologetic about it? Not hardly!
Yes, the teacher gave Quayle a card with the word incorrectly spelled.
I WONDER if someone became rich for supplying to Quayle a card, AT THE NATIONAL SPELLING BEE, with potato spelled with an E on the end?
Does ANYONE believe that was an innocent mistake, or was it a calculated attempt to make a Republican look foolish?
In fairness, I seriously doubt George HW Bush set foot in a grocery store in at least 8 years prior to that except on photo ops. He was VP during that time and they generally don't run down to the store for eggs and milk, even when snow is coming.
And let's be frank, George HW Bush came across as what I think he was, a patrician snob. Good man, hero who served his country in war, all that yes. But not a man of the people. Now if W walked into a grocery store to buy eggs while he was President and said he was doing it to spare the White House staff the effort, I'd actually buy it.
By they way, this is a good illustration of the democrat playbook. GOP politician who isn't man of the people = out of touch, heartless and evil. GOP politician who is a man of the people = stupid hick.
What? No Gerald Ford tripping on AF1?
No G HW Bush puking on the Prime Minister of Japan?
