Immigrants march to Raleigh, demand in-state tuition rates

Immigration activists marched from Chapel Hill to Raleigh on Saturday to demand that in-state tuition rates be given to students who have received a temporary federal reprieve from deportation.

Around 40 activists ended the “March of Broken Dreams” with a mock funeral outside the office of state Attorney General Roy Cooper. The protesters charge that Cooper has been silent about whether students in the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program are entitled to the lower college tuition rates offered to in-state residents.

“Every day that passes, someone’s dream dies,” said Oliva Prezas, 19, of Oxford, one of the students who spoke at the “funeral,” which was organized by the N.C. Dream Team. “Attorney General Cooper needs to speak out.”

Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman for Cooper, said a legal opinion about the issue is being drafted.

The DACA program began in 2012 by President Barack Obama to award temporary resident status to immigrants who were brought into the country as children when their parents arrived illegally. Of that group, those whose DACA applications are approved receive two-year deferrals from deportation.

To be eligible, applicants must meet requirements such as being under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012; entering the U.S. when they were under the age of 16; having a clean record; and being in school or having graduated with a high school diploma.

According to news reports, at least 17 states allow DACA students to receive in-state tuition. But the body that governs Virginia’s public colleges says those students aren’t eligible for the lower rates.

Background on Oliva Prezas Garces..I have lived here almost my entire life. I was raised here. I overcame the challenge to learn english. I gave my academics top priority. My future is here in North Carolina and this is my home.

Attending Vance Granville Community College is a major challenge to me. Everyday, I worry that I will not have enough money to pay the high cost to take classes there. What if I lose my job? Or even worse, what if I don’t graduate on time because I cannot pay my tuition? All of that time, money, and hard work will go to waste.

Anybody else notice illegals select the most costly degrees..From 2008.......Tuition at private schools varies almost as much as in public institutions, but without state support the colleges generally cost more. Students at Duke University in North Carolina entering in 2008 will pay about $55,680 for the two-year program, while physician assistants at Yale University in New Haven Connecticut would pay over $68,000 on tuition alone for their 2 year and four month program...Based on 2008 does anybody really believe this illegal could pay on her own with in-state tuition be able to pay $55,680 ? By now it must be up in $ 75,000 range.Poor thing I had to work to pay for my current cost of college..Americans should be out there marching demanding the illegals be deported, stop stealing jobs and college seats from Americans.

RE “Immigration activists marched from Chapel Hill to Raleigh on Saturday to demand that in-state tuition rates be given to students who have received a temporary federal reprieve from deportation.”

Illegals are getting quite bold marching and demanding stuff.

Mexico doesn't put up with crap like this.

I have a hard time believing that any of them will actually pay back their school loans.

They will take the grant money and bolt.

What does Virginia’s Public Colleges have to do with this article about a march
from UNC, Chapel Hill and Raliegh? Confusing to say the least.

“Every day that passes, someone’s dream dies,”

Nice of you to notice. Yes, every day under 0 someone’s dream dies. His dreams of working at a job that he is qualified for, having enough money to live on, to put some away for retirement, to help pay for kids’ college. Yes, those dreams are fading away.

Glad you noticed.

Odd, isn’t it, we are told all the time illegals are “living in the shadows” and “living in fear”. . .when all facts are to the contrary.

Bite me, illegal aliens, BITE ME.

IN a sane world cops would round out the protesters, check their identities and send the illegal aliens to a Joe Arpio type camp (tents and bologna sandwiches) for processing prior to deportation...

Yep. It’s a felony (maybe) in Mexico for foreigners to get involved in anything political I think.

I wonder what happens when you call ICE? https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/735

How can I report illegal activity?

Illegal Aliens

If you would like to report illegal aliens, please call Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at 1-866-DHS-2ICE (347-2423). They will need to know names, locations (either work place or residence) and any other specific information you can provide. Visit www.ice.gov for more information.

Around 40 activists

So, using MSM math, there was proably 1/2 dozen or so.

In comparison, in Charlotte this weekend, 100K+ were in town for the football game. There were a couple of hundred people at the sports bar where I watched the game, and there are a dozen or more sports bars in town that were just as crowded. Puts things in perspective.
