The American Flag Daily: Abraham Lincoln
The American Flag Daily ^ | January 24, 2014 | FlagBearer

Let every American, every lover of liberty, every well-wisher to his posterity swear by the blood of the Revolution never to violate in the least particular the laws of the country, and never to tolerate their violation by others. As the patriots of seventy-six did to the support of the Declaration of Independence, so to the support of the Constitution and laws let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor—let every man remember that to violate the law is to trample on the blood of his father, and to tear the charter of his own and his children's liberty. -Abraham Lincoln

What didn’t work? The part where he asks for a righteous people to behave in an upright fashion? Where he urged folks against lawlessness like burning people alive and lynching people? The part where he he exhorted citizens to take the high road by resolving differences peacefully and lawfully instead of by acts of treason and terror?

I guess you’re right - it didn’t work, that is if by working you mean honorable people behaving honorably. It didn’t work because unscrupulous people sought personal aggrandizement and enrichment at the expense of the our nation. They put their personal ambitions above The Noble Experiment and turned on their neighbors and brothers.

Fortunately for all of us Lincoln’s faith in America was stronger than his enemies faith in madness.

Lincoln was a writer of great power, I wonder that he didn’t become as a novelist.

It was tragic to be sure. But look at our example today. Are we not reminded even here on FR that we bear arms to protect from tyranny and to preserve Liberty? Yet Liberty is being trampled by tyranny right under foot right as we write.

As wrong as you think I might be, is this the government you claim such fealty to? How much deeper into hell must we proceed now?
