America’s police more likely to Menace and Intimidate than Protect and Serve

“In the military mind set, the “drug war” has moved from metaphor to real life, with American streets as the “front,” American citizens as the “enemy” and law enforcement officers as the warriors.

At the direction of Congress, the Pentagon has spent the past 20 years providing military hardware free of charge to police departments throughout the nation, all for the stated purpose of fighting the War on Drugs. Billions of dollars worth of “surplus” military grade equipment has been transferred, literally enabling law enforcement in towns both large and small to serve warrants, control crowds and “keep the peace” with ordnance originally purposed for the annihilation of a foreign enemy. In the first three years of this federal collaboration between the Department of Defense and the Department of Justice (1994-1997) “…the Pentagon distributed 3,800 M-16s, 2,185 M-14s, 73 grenade launchers...

“Mostly they just hide and pounce on drivers to git their loot for city coffers since the city drove most of the down town business away.”

Don’t tell me, Progressives, right? Have they mentioned light rail as a plan to bring the downtown back? How about lots of Greenways and bike paths with art in the median?

Sorry, just ranting.

I’m sure there are good cops here and there.

But on the whole, the police force here in America only protects and serves - ITSELF and its governmental bosses.

Period.

But I’ve never heard a politician or a talk show “mouth” who doesn’t suck up to cops.

Between the heavy armament and the SEIU union, police are morphing into the new Pretorian Guard, responsible to no one. In Ancient Rome, the Pretorians eventually accumulated enough power that they began to dictate who would be emperor and were complicit in the assassination of several emperors who earned their disfavor. Politicians are just showing their lizard-brain deference to those in power.

Well I know what my agency uses an “armored personnel carrier” for...it gets parked in the front yard of a violent suspect while he is hiding inside so they can talk over the PA system to him without taking lead.
Pretty oppressive huh?

Like this?

Yup. Live on Lake Michigan and the cops go after the teens here like crazy. Well, unless they play football or have the right last name.
Our former police chief actually was caught throwing a beer can out of his police vehicle. He did eventually get a littering charge.
No, absolutely no, respect for cops by me except the ones who actually help at accidents and that sort of thing. The ones here are out for revenue and donuts.

Because what’s currently going on in this now thoroughly screwed up country — especially Connecticut and New York — are heading straight into “Unintended Consequences” of massive and deadly proportions!

Then again, they may NOT be so unintended after all.

Wake up America. Heavy armored vehicles with machine guns are not needed for civilian law enforcement.

No they are not, but I hope the police departments keep them well maintained, fueled, stocked with plenty of ammo, and ready to use.

We ourselves may very well need them in the upcoming days and since they are close at hand.................

..and by bad tactics I am meaning if you have a threat inside a house...police don’t use “covering fire” so posting up like that is not a necessarily smart...but that picture looks like the are moving through a neighborhood looking for a suspect on foot.

I’m not sure what the elements of that incident are....shooter running through a neighborhood or something I would guess.

I read the headline and it suddenly hit me - a theme I’d not really thought of.

You may have heard the phrase, “Liberals love the masses but hate people, while conservatives love people but hate the masses.” Well, the headline points to a police force that “protects and serves the masses” but heaven help the “people” that come in direct contact with them while doing their job.

i.e. a completely innocent person being harassed at a police checkpoint interfering with police “protecting” society at large, and even that protection is dubious.

I know some FReepers watch the Walking Dead. One of the things that makes it “work” is a complete absence of government! Of course our heroes are decent people, but they have complete freedom (and responsibility) to do what they find best.

the mutts in office would do well to at least have somebody read them the synopsis, or like you said, maybe it's NOT so unintended after all...

That’s a picture taken during the lock-down of Boston following the Boston marathon bombing.

The ‘big’ question has gone from “Ginger or Maryann” to

“Will the US Military fire upon American citizens?”

I for one believe it is very possible they will.
At least back when I was in, the ‘target’ didn’t really matter. ‘They’ told us who the ‘bad guys’ were and, for the most part, the ‘bad guys’ were set upon.

Just to further it the Military is/are ‘well trained killers’, as is pointed out ‘the job is to kill people and break things.’

In the 30’s MacArthur had no problem dispersing the ‘Bonus Army’ and they were not only American citizens, they were Vets.

Even into the ‘50s ‘dungaree liberties’ were formed by bases to ‘show the townies’ what was what.

They were searching for the bomber in Boston. That pic has become a classic - I think it is stuff like that that are getting people ticked. Not the norm, but I fear it will be if it isn’t nipped in the bud.

Why are people mad about that.....the bombers were in full kiling mode...throwing homemade bombs....killing en masse....I dont get it....I know it was only two guys (then one) but they were literally waging a war in a neighborhood...is it so shocking that the people trying to catch the suspect were in a search mode like that picture shows?

“Those who set the stage should be at the front.. instead they hide behind badges and warrants.. and boots.”

And government office doors, with armed guards.

Wow.

Really? They were throwing bombs around? They were waging war in a neighborhood? Surely if they were doing that, there would be photographic evidence of same. The fact is, beyond the initial bombing, the only people waging war on anyone was the government itself.

Sorry for delay - this fell between the cracks.

If it was just me, it could be written off as yet another paranoia attack, but this type of behavior reinforces the Them vs US scenario that so many in law enforcement seem to have today. The militarization of our police force, in a lot of peoples' minds, brings us that much closer to the Gestapo mindset. Actions like this reinforce that - and the fact that you see nothing wrong with it doesn't help.
