Dear "Master" Vance,

You know, you got well and truly ambushed the other day by "Guerrilla Girl Ashley" who allowed you to do a job on yourself and your department that would be hard for a wizened old one-eyed Viet Cong fighter to top. (3)

The Romans used to say, "In vino veritas," which translates “in wine [there is the] truth." Presumably you weren't drunk on duty, though. No, in your case, I'd have to say it was "In ira veritas" -- In anger there is truth. It is evident that your cop skills never went to interrogation, for that is a universal trick of interrogators around the world. Witness this passage from a Nepalese website article on Interview & Interrogation 101: "An emotional offender is usually a first time offender and can be broken down easily when played with his emotion, ie, love, hatred, anger, frustration, etc." (4)

Guerrilla Girl Ashley used your arrogance and ignorance to lure you into the L-shaped untruth-kill-zone and then used your anger and frustration to spring the ambush. Score: Connecticut firearm owners 100 percent, Connecticut State Police, zip, zero, nada. Your bosses cannot be very pleased. Especially old Mike "KGB" Lawlor. (5)

Calling Ashley "un-American," now that was predictable, but going all Darth-Vader-to-Obi-Wan-Kenobi on her, ranting repeatedly "I am the master," well, that was just too precious. It was a great gift for which we thank you, so self-revealing is it. In Ira Veritas indeed.

Darth Vader: I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but the learner; now *I* am the master.

But as Obi-Wan reminds him: "Only a master of evil, Darth."

This master-servant conflict is at the heart of American liberty, and has been since the beginning.

"Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action." -- Unsourced quote attributed to George Washington.

Whether Washington actually said that is arguable. The central truth of it is not, as you just reminded us all. I recently gave a speech at the Alamo exploring the central question of this century: Do the people serve the government, or does the government serve the people as the Founders intended, and made plain in the text of the Constitution? (6) I can understand why you were made nervous by Ashley's question about your oath to that document:

“Did I take an oath to the Constitution? What bearing does that have on this conversation? . . . I don’t want to talk about the Constitution, Ma’am, at all, at all.” It has every bearing, of course, and your reply illustrates that arrogance of attitude and ignorance of your audience that led you to such a bad PR end.

Indeed, the only way you have gotten away with such a statement so far is that you are talking about firearms confiscation (and not, say, racial profiling) and that the Connecticut media (7)is ignoring the 85% of Connecticut firearm owners (who are telling you to stick it where the sun don't shine) with all the willful blindness of Walter Duranty in the Stalinist Soviet Union. (8)

But it was your bureaucrat's rejection of personal responsibility for the upcoming bloody raids that struck me most forcefully. You really believe that crap, don't you? You really believe that with Connecticut citizens targeted for deadly raids that, you, the public face of such tyranny, would bear no responsibility or culpability for those deaths. Try to look at it from the victim's point of view for a moment, Lieutenant. Did Josef Goebbels deserve a pass because he didn't put the Zyklon B in the gas chambers? Had he not cheated the Allies retribution by suicide, Hitler's public face would have danced the executioner's jig at Nuremberg just like the rest.

This is what Ashley was trying to get across to you. You cling to "the law" as if it is some sort of shield EVEN WHEN IT VIOLATES THE CONSTITUTION AND IS NULL AND VOID. Ashley missed an opportunity to ask a salient question at that point and I will ask it now.

So, if the law is going to be enforced NOW, or at least in the next weeks or months, and the U.S. Supreme Court won't get the case for at least another year and a half, what are you going to do when you discover that the law you've been killing people under is null and void? Oh, that's right, you don't do that sort of thing yourself, you're just paid to excuse it and explain it away, like Herr Goebbels.

You were a recipient of my Open Letter to the Men and Women of the Connecticut State Police. (9) You have by now, if you're doing your job properly, also read my "Open Letter to the Legislative Tyrants of Connecticut." (10) You have no doubt been made aware of the fact that I posted a list of their home addresses in "A Sipsey Street Public Service Announcement: The Connecticut Tyrants List, voluntarily subscribed by the participants on 3 April 2013." Yet you honestly believe that because your job description doesn't include kicking in doors and shooting people who merely want to be left alone -- who are simply defending themselves from you taking their liberty, their property and their lives -- that YOU WILL BE EXCUSED? Do you think that in the aftermath of the civil war that your agency starts on behalf of craven, cowardly, corrupt wannabe tyrants that people who are your victims of state violence will forget your proclamation that "I AM THE MASTER"?!?!?!?

Are you really that stupid?

My Grandpa Vanderboegh told me that such people existed in the world, and I have encountered many of the type in my 62 years, but you, sir, are the penultimate clueless idiot. The ULTIMATE clueless idiot will be the leader of the raid stack who kicks in the wrong door "because it's the law" and he was "ordered to do it" and gets predictably killed for his trouble. So you, sir, are merely the penultimate idiot. However, there is a prize for that, too, under the Law of Unintended Consequences. I guess we'll just have to wait to find out what it is. In the meantime, if it comforts you, by all means go ahead and imagine that you are the master of all of us unenlightened, unwashed citizens who cling to their faith and their firearms.

Just remember that Josef Goebbels is looking over your shoulder, grinning from Hell. If you look intently in the mirror, you might just be able to see him, chuckling at your cluelessness.

I concur - absolutely chilling - us v. them / just following orders mindset on display. Vance apparently either cannot or will not consider thinking for himself. He will order his officers to follow commands while he stays behind his desk. It is now decision time for every bureaucrat - from those who type the orders to those who carry them out.
