Plato Lays Into Obama Administration

Or he would if here to witness this debacle...

The price of apathy in public affairs is to be ruled by evil men

Rhetoric is the art of ruling the minds of men

Whatever deceives men seems to produce a magical enchantment

Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly,
while bad people will find a way around the laws

Only the dead have seen the end of war

Justice means minding one's own business and
not meddling with other men's concerns

Ignorance, the root and stem of all evil

The measure of a man is what he does with power

This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs;
when he first appears he is a protector

He who is not a good servant will not be a good master

Your silence gives consent

He was a wise man who invented beer...

From the article: Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws

Where Reagan went astray here is to assume that anyone is "good." We are all sinners. There is none of us good, except for one. We all need laws, some more than others. If anybody claims to be "good," he is a fool or a liar. Watch out for him/her. In fact, watch out for yourself.

Jesus summed this up in a nutshell, warning a fawning admirer:

"And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments" (Mat 19:17 AV).

The commandments are law. To God, all humans are born criminals. That's why He sent Jesus, to rescue us from our crimes. And we all do them, even by not doing something we ought to.

Reagan was wrong. We all do need laws to define goodness, and mark that which is evil. He also needed to be subject to the law, else he would not have been an effective President.

Barack Hussein Obama clearly does not consider himself subject to the law, nor of social mores, and neither are his sycophants.

Here’s another gem(/s) from Plato:

“The rulers of the state are the only persons who ought to have the privilege of lying, either at home or abroad; they may be allowed to lie for the good of the state.”

It all depends on how far you want to take it, i think Reagan was talking about taking law too far which makes for a police state, and he was right.

No one is good in the sense that Jesus spoke, he said only God is good, but in the secular sense Reagan was thought of as a good man even among many democrats.

We did not have to worry about what abomination he was going to come up with next.

On the other hand people like Obama will find a way around the law.

The first secular law is the Constitution in the U.S and any other law must be in accordance with the first, but that does not stop Obama from going around it because he is a bad man.

Secular laws do not define goodness, they only define what is legal, remember the things Jesus told the scribes and pharisees, they were law, law and more law.

Did he really say that? i imagine since Reagan,s Presidency he now knows that leaders can be honest.

“Whatever deceives men seems to produce a magical enchantment”

I’d say when men deceive themselves it seems like some kind of spell. When good men are deceived but then realize it there can be a whole world of trouble.

Its the same as how people who have been scammed are resistent to accepting the reality, prefer to prolong the delusion themselves

If you read the Bible, instead of commentary on the Bible, you will see that it is a little more complicated than your simplistic theological point. The fact that you put "good" in quotes should have reminded you that English does not quite tell the story that theologians wished it did.

Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as He is righteous. 1John 3:7

1John is not a welcome book to many theologians.

1 John 3

4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. 5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

Romans 3

9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 and the way of peace have they not known: 18 there is no fear of God before their eyes. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

I'm not sure whose points are simplistic here, but you certainly are self-assured.

No, not self assured. Simply more familiar with original languages than many arm chair theologians who are good at spouting the theological line in opposition to any thought other than their brand loyalty.

The "doctrine" of total depravity has been taught often, but it is not as cut and dried as Augustinians think. Regardless, the OP is the one taking Reagan to task for believing that there are people who have good behavior. The OP was splitting theological hairs over "being good" or "doing good." It is the silliest form of sophistry, when all moral people should agree that good behavior is needed in the world.

I think that the idea is that God is perfect,:jesus is perfectly sinless. We are not.

Christians can sin and still be saved. Non-Christians could be saved if they were perfectly sinless, but they cannot achieve this.

No one disputes the importance of “doing good”, even of “being good” by man’s standards. God’s standards are harder to meet. The “hair” is a pretty substantial one.

However, you are right in that good behavior is need, and that good can be done in this world. Just not by liberals. :)
