After decades of decline, the share of mothers who stay home with their children has steadily risen over the last several years, a new report has found.

In 2012, 29% of all mothers with children under age 18 stayed at home, a figure that has steadily risen since 1999 when 23% of mothers were stay-at-home, the Pew Research Center reported Tuesday. The share of stay-at-home moms had been dropping since 1967, when about half of all moms stayed home. [... snip ...]

Is it ironic that the policies of Progressivism may lead to a resurgence of the traditional family?

As fewer and fewer jobs become available seems that Moms may take the hit and opt to 'run the household' rather than becoming double income parents with latch key kids.

This may be a benefit to Society as children grow up to be more responsible, educated, spiritual and I dare say conservative?

I know it's a stretch but one can only hope.

You’re assuming these ‘stay at home mom’s’ are married. And that uncle sugar isn’t the working dad.

I remember reading several years ago that between 1990 and 2000 the number of women staying home full time had jumped about 10%. Good to see the trend increasing!

I think the article makes it clear that it is an intact family.

Now, I suppose the WSJ author will be chastised for using the term mom when referring to 1/2 of the family unit (excluding the children).

Oh, look at the little jimmy carter bump. Looking at the graph do we see a causality between expanding economies and contracting economies?

Actually it doesn’t make that clear at all.

It states that 85% of married SAHM’s do it for the family’s benefit. That doesn’t mean that 85% of SAHM’s are married.

It also indicates an increase in immigrant SAHM’s. Most of our immigrants are Hispanic. And out of wedlock births are out of sight in that community.

and an increase in the number of women who said they were disabled and unable to work.

"Disability" is a modern day career-choice for more and more people. Did your childhood pet die of old age? If yes, you may be eligible for a lifetime of PTSD benefits. Do you get bored with calculus? If yes, you may be eligible for a lifetime of ADHD benefits. Don't forget to fill out your Dem voter registration card when signing up for your benefits.

There were many such moms in my mainly Hispanic former neighborhood. I’d see them with their strollers and toddlers in tow heading to the park every morning when I was driving to work. I knew the community well enough to know that a large majority of them weren’t married to the children’s fathers. Nice enough women if you had basic Spanish skills to strike up a convseration. But very open about taking advantage of welfare benefits.

OMG, I see what you are saying. They have a sugar daddy, and his name is Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam is paying all her bills. She has no actual real man in her life.

I do not think hispanic culture has quite accepted the idea of women breadwinners.

WSJ putting lipstick on a pig, IMO.

Uncle Sam is going to have to raise taxes and devalue the dollar more. Can’t have this trend continuing!
Our situation is pretty good. My husband works 24 hours and is home 48 hours. I work 7:30-3:00 Monday through Friday and I’m off all summer. We are able to have a sitter come to the house 1-2 days per week. Other than that, it’s mommy and daddy taking care of the kids.
Five years ago I could have been a stay at home mom, but now I’m investing heavily for my retirement. I don’t know what to expect in 20 years. Will I have to travel for healthcare? Will investing 25% of my income be enough to sustain me considering the devaluation of our currency?

The best thing in the world is a women that takes her responsibilities seriously. Women are the teachers of the young boys to an age, when their fathers take over, and then girls through out their lives.

Funny how their culture has accepted multiple children out of wedlock and “free” money from Big Gov. I get tired of cultural groups using their “culture” to take my money.

also, assuming that the moms staying home are actually “being” a mom rather than just being a lump on the couch.
