The aliens must have been observing libtards. That’d explain it.

We’ve bubbled to the top, no question. We have a clear understanding of our galactic and extra-galactic environment. As far as “contact” goes, it’s only our own galaxy that’s in play, but even there, the barriers of space and time are formidable. My opinion is that they are more than formidable, they are prohibitive, which makes the whole question moot. Maybe I’m wrong.

Look at the bright side, it's a better explanation than the alternative explanation - that they are still waiting on finishing the cookbook

The idea that the first hint an extraterrestrial species will have of us is old I Love Lucy reruns

That's historical documents.

I would hazard a guess that anyone that gets a doctorate in a science is a smart fellow.

But I would reserve an appellation like “One of the smartest guys in the world” for those of demonstrated superior abilities.. i.e., someone like Steven Hawking.

Our tv and radio emissions scatter, there would be not enough left to get any kind of recognizable signal by the time it gets to another star

Not a fan of Tyson, but I’m pretty sure he was joking when he said that.

I think he was being serious.

Like a lot of scientists he believes the only true knowledge is scientific knowledge. He has absolutely no use for theological, philosophical, or even conceptual knowledge unless it is an aid to scientific knowledge.

If there are leaps and bounds yet to be made in our understanding of the universe (e.g. the true nature of dark matter and dark energy, more about string theory, what strings are composed of, etc.) then our scientific knowledge may very well be a pittance compared to an alien civilization that has been around for thousands, or maybe millions, more years than ours.

But humans should get more credit than lots of scientists will allow for our theological, philosophical, and conceptual knowledge. In this regard we may not be far behind the most advanced alien species.

Oh and BTW, Tyson's an idiot.

BULL! The saw what happened to Klaatu, back in 1951, and have been shaking in their tentacle covers ever since.
