Though liberal Democrats have little appreciation for the spiritual meaning of Christmas, events of December 2012 would bring Joy to the Political World of every avid, gun-hating politician in Washington D.C.
For on December 14th, twenty children and six adults responsible for their care were shot to death at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Their killer ended his own life minutes later with a round to the head.
Understanding the importance of disarming the American people, gun confiscation advocates like Chuck Schumer, Diane Feinstein and Barack Obama no doubt wished the death toll had been higher. But as children were involved, even 20 dead would have the American public ready to accept—however unwillingly–a raft of new, anti-gun edicts. Democrats and the national media would see to that. For neither the NRA nor pro-gun Republicans would have the gall to stand in the way by quoting chapter and verse of the 2nd Amendment. Not this time. After all, never had the left been blessed with such a delicious level of exploitable carnage! It would be a legislative gimme!

When one looks at the sheer mass of bad federal gun law, and realizes that the NRA has been around for every single one of the infringements, what is left to be said?
A fence sitting entity trying to masquerade as a gun rights organization we need like another hole in the head.
This is the only time in 20 years that the NRA didn’t fold and concede anything to the gun grabbing crowd. I think it has more to do with the growth of 2nd amendment groups like GOA and others. The NRA saw many of it’s members leaving to join these other groups. The NRA’s stance here was likely more about money and membership than conviction.
I left the NRA after they folded on the so called assault weapons ban in 94.
The blood of Sandy Hook will never be washed from the likes of the Brady Campaign and others who support criminal free fire zones and letting the violent, mentally insane out on the streets.
Perhaps the NRA can explain its last endorsement of Harry Reid.
The NRA has been a lightning rod for every anti gun lightning bolt that has come along. The mere fact is that we can still own rifles and HANDGUNS is proof of that.

Here is what I remember from those days.
1962 Thomas J Dodd and Emaual Cellar proposed the first federal law on handguns.
1962; “We don’t want to take away your guns, we ONLY want to register handguns! Rifles and shotguns will not be affected”.
1964: “We only want to register all your guns, not ban them! Only Army surplus guns will be banned.”
1968: “We only want to register your guns, and ban “Saturday Night Specials” and small foreign handguns along with army surplus rifles!” (They got the ban on 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles and handguns and small foreign pistols)
1970: “We only want to ban Saturday night specials! Large handguns and rifles will not be affected!”
1971: “According to the SCOTUS, Miller Decision, RIFLES are protected under the 2nd Amendment, handguns are not!”
1976: “We only want to ban all handguns! Long guns will not be affected!”
1981: “The NRA is a rifle organization! They should give up their handguns, and they can keep their rifles!”- Lee Grant on GMA
1984: “We must ban “assault Rifles, unsuitable or hunting!”
1989: George Bush bans import of some foreign made “assault rifles”.
1992: Assault rifle ban passed by Clinton.
2000: first calls to ban single shot .50 cal rifles...
2012 calls for MORE bans on semi auto rifles and handguns.
And so it continues.
Can YOU stand against the ANTI-GUN politicians, Bloomberg and the Brady Center when they come against you with their millions of dollars?
Say what you might, but the only BIG DOG to stop this nonsense has been the NRA.
If you want "compromise" with the anti-gunners then the NRA is the way to go. For years they never found a gun control law that they couldn't live with as long as they appeared to oppose some aspects. However, the right to keep and bear arms isn't suitable for compromise - either you have the right or you don't. If you have to pass a background check, one of the famous NRA compromises, (ie get the government's permission) then you no longer have the right. You don't need permission to exercise a right. If you have to ask permission, then it's a privilege, not a right.
You forgot the 1986 ban on full auto signed into law by Ronald Reagan.

That was a poison pill placed in the act by the Dems to kill it. The passing of the law allowed us to buy rifles across state lines and ammo without having to sign for it.

You could buy a rifle, pistol, shotgun anywhere. If you needed ammo the store owner could break up a box of 20 and sell you a few rounds for hunting. NO paper work needed, no government permission.
AFTER 1968.
You could not buy a rifle, pistol or shotgun across state lines. Paperwork required for in state buys. No more broken up boxes of ammo as records were kept on who bought what. No bolt action army surplus rifles were available.
1986.
The law was amended so a person could buy rifles and shotguns across state lines, but not handguns. Ammo record keeping requirements were dropped.
The Dems added the Full auto ban in hopes of killing the whole package. The revision was good for most gun owners and buyers but not full auto buyers. The Government cut their own throat on that one as they lost their tax revenue.
Have you noticed that bolt action army surplus rifles are again available? They did not turn out to be the murderous killing machines they were made out to be before 1968.
Since 1986, I have bought several rifles at the Tulsa Gun Show which is out of state thanks to the 1986 revision.

You are correct “COMPLETE LOSS” and only a few years shy of reality. 1986 was the first move toward a complete ban of a certain type of weapon and it is working well. Today it is the price of an Uzi or any other machine gun, tomorrow there will be no more as the finite supply of antique, WW1, WWII, obsolete, and pre 86 receivers wear out, concurrent with the time they become so expensive Bill Gates couldn’t afford one.
When the government controls importation, weaponry, the ammo, and eventually parts for repair, yet they remain unrestricted I see the citizen at an extreme disadvantage. No founding Father would ever give government power to usurp Constitutional Rights and the ability to overpower the people. WACO was a preview I don’t need another.

Maybe this will help, I have been an NRA member at least a half dozen times, and everytime, something stupid takes place and I don’t renew, because I’m NOT supporting an organizating that isn’t protecting my second amendment rights, and as I see it, in this day and age if you are endorsing Democrats as pro-gun you have a screw loose, NOT YOU, the NRA.
So my bottom line is where do you stand vis-a-vis the NRA, but before you go there maybe you could explain this: “Four million NRA members out of 300 MM ?”

That is, until some criminals bought one and blew open a vault.
No more big guns, no more through the mail deliveries. But then, that was back in the dark ages before the 1968 Gun control act and the NRA had less than a hundred thousand members and NO lobbying arm. Yet I don’t hear anyone crying about not being able to buy a BOYS anti-tank rifle through the mail!
