The Atlantic: Doctors Most Qualified to Decide Who's Fit to Carry a Gun
Breitbart's Big Journalism ^ | June 30, 2014 | AWR Hawkins

On June 30 The Atlantic ran a column focused on treating firearms as "a public health crisis" and allowing physicians "to determine who is fit to carry a gun."

According to The Atlantic, "all U.S. states allow citizens to carry certain concealed weapons in public for lawful purposes, with the exception of felons, persons proven to abuse controlled substances, individuals with a history of domestic violence, and those deemed mentally unstable or dangerous."

Citing the caveat regarding "those deemed mentally unstable or dangerous," The Atlantic explains that "some states may... require" a physician to sign off on a concealed carry permit application before one is issued. This points to an opportunity for physicians in all states on this matter, because "gun violence" is increasingly described as "a public health crisis."

After all, "the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and U.S. Surgeon General nominee Vivek Murthy are calling gun violence a public health crisis," which provides a basis for viewing doctors "as a crucial link in the prevention chain."

A survey of physician attitudes on this subject printed in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that 59 percent of responding physicians do not believe they can "accurately assess whether [their] patient is physically capable of safely using a concealed weapon."(continued)

If I can find a Dr. who would give me a Marijuana prescription for medical pot, I could find a Dr. who would sign off on Jeffrey Dahmer for Guns.

Note to The Atlantic: I don’t think so Skippy. Doctors are NOT qualified to decide who’s fit to carry a gun because most of them know absolutely nothing about them. That’s like me saying I can so brain surgery because I read a book and took a 50 question multiple choice test. Would you want me to do brain surgery on you? I thought not.

Because they’ve done so well with the mentally disturbed, and all criminals follow the law. Yep.

I was under the impression that “who’s fit to carry a gun” was already decided - December 15, 1791 - when the Bill of Rights was adopted.

“Doctor - he has a pulse!”

“That’s fine. Sir - you can pick up your choice of guns in the waiting area and we will add it to your checkup.”

Good point. The secret service takes their job seriously, unlike most other federal employees. That is funny that a secret service person put that sticker on the beast. Now that the ice has been broken, what other stickers will be found on the obamamobile?

The secret service takes their job seriously

I think that used to be true, but lately there have been a good number of incidents of them partying like rock stars.

Lets see I’m trying to find the part of the 2nd amendment that says the right to bear arms shall not be infringed as long as the doctor says its OK. :-)

statistically true.

Of course many of those deaths were going to happen without doctors being involved too.
