Skip to comments.Homely/Bizarre Soviet-Era Vehicles: They Waited TEN Years for THIS?

Hard to pick a winner. It’s like they designed a car from what they had in the parts bin.
It’s just another mid-year, built on Friday, ‘union’ supported General Motors - Moscow plant vehicle!
That Moskovicj 408 would be a flat awesome hot rod done up as a Pro street/Gasser.
Skoda 100 probably better than the Soviet copy even back then, I would think
And Tatra certainly outdid anything the Russians ever put on the road
That 408 is actually a nice looking car. Wikipedia says it was a concept car 1964 aluminum body, removable hardtop and electronic fuel injection. Don’t know anything about it. It could have been pretty hot for its day. Some of the others are weird, but we had the Pontiac Aztek, almost everything AMC made, and a few other slightly off cars and trucks.
The ZiL 4906 or 49061 is amphibious.
Looks like an adaptation for extreme cold conditions.
My dad had a 408 sedan back to earlier 1980s, wife’s grand daddy kept an 2141 (liftback version of 2142 pictured at link) from late 1980s into earlier 2000s.
My wife is Czech. Her mother and father had to put down 15,000 krone and wait 5 years for a Skoda. They abandoned everything they owned and fled in 1968 to Germany.
She fumes every day about Obama because she’s seen it all before.
I didn’t know Yugo made trucks also.
Mine Czech too, Gaffer
thats the toxic avengers truck...lol
So it’s official: The Aztec was designed by a former Soviet automobile engineer.
Yeah maybe heh heh
You say that like its a bad thing.
Both of the IZH 2125s could have been sold by AMC.
The ‘Special Olympics’ of automobiles.
I don’t know if you are a gamer, but the Fallout games have one car I wish would have been made in real life. the “Chryslus Corvega”. It looks like a 50’s concept car gone horribly, horribly wrong.
I know beauty is in the eye of the beer holder and all, but this thing is just wrong to the point of being awesome. It looks like a 55 Chevy and an ElCamino/Ranchero had sex. Then again I actually like the Edsel. No, Seriously ;)
(Sure, get a hood that fits, and put a scoop on the hood, and modernize the whole design, but there's a kernel of a good rally car somewhere in there.)
I loved the communist cars episode. The commies built some sad stuff.
“That Moskovicj 408 would be a flat awesome hot rod done up as a Pro street/Gasser.”
x2 Amen brother!
Thanks for the post. I just spent the better part of an hour going to the links under the pictures. Good stuff.
I visited the links under the pictures. Why am I strangely attracted to these fugly vehicles?
Click the link under the green Pinzgauer. Up to $19k. Man, I’d like to have one of those to play around on my land.
It says they only have 90 horsepower and slow as Christmas. But the transmission is twice the size of the engine. With all 6 wheels locked it will yank the gates off of hell in low gear.
The BBC program, Top Gear, based upon all things transportation in personal vehicles has done specials on these cars.
When something is designed and built by a committee, it is USUALLY sad/bad stuff. Here in the US we have epic examples of our own. The good stuff has someone's inspiration and desire behind it and in the modern car companies with international markets and cost constraints, these very seldom come to market.
My epic American fail since it was for the premium car line; the Cadillac Cimarron (1982), a rebadged Chevy J-car to attract BMW fans to an American small luxury car.
Wasn’t some guy named Naderizov shipped off to the gulag for saying that Moskvich 408 Tourist was “unsafe at any speed”?
Might have known you’d beat me to it!
This truck kills me. It violates every rule ever written. Only thing wrong with it it appears the wheels are all the same size.
Epic fail and proves their taste is all in their mouth...
That truck sort of reminds me of that fugly NY hag with the sloppy lips that moved to Florida and is always yammering for the democrats.
It was hard to hold back the mirth at someone gullible enough to buy such a POS foisted so cynically on them.
Some car magazine tested it and suggested it drove like an Accord that did not run very well.
"My little babushka, we must buy it. We paint it, take kids, go camping in woods, and wrestle bears."
A Russian RV?
I never click your links but this topic is very interesting
If they designed on, I imagine it’d probably look like that. Most likely doesn’t run for crap, but if it did it seems like it’d be a helluva lot of fun.
“Quiet children! This is Russian RV, we do not need road to get to camp! We make road!”
was the 408 anything like the one in the picture? How’d it run?
It was exactly the same, but our was a 4 door sedan. I have never actually seen a coupe version pictured there, it is probably a prototype.
How has it run? Well, not so good comparing to modern cars but not too bad comparing to the rest of European small cars from the 1960s. AFAIK the engine was a BMW knock-off.
