Putin: Nothing Was Wrong With the Soviet Union’s Pact With Nazi Germany

Russian President Vladimir Putin said November 4 that he sees nothing wrong with the Molotov-Ribbentrop non-aggression pact that the Soviet Union made with Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany just days before World War ii broke out.

The Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact was a promise of non-belligerence by either party toward the other. Just a week after it was signed, Germany invaded Poland, officially igniting World War ii.

“Serious research must show that those were the foreign policy methods then,” Putin said to a group of young historians in Moscow. “The Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty with Germany. People say: ‘Ach, that’s bad.’ But what’s bad about that if the Soviet Union didn’t want to fight; what’s bad about it?”

But the details of the Molotov–Ribbentrop agreement show that it was no declaration of pacifism by the Soviets.

Except for that Operation Barbarossa thing.

“Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?”

It was just a matter of who would violate it first.

Mr Putin conveniently leaves out the secret articles where the two powers divide up eastern europe into their respective spheres of influence. what he is saying is true...there isnt anything wrong in and of itself with a non-agression pact. his lie is a lie of omission.

You’ve posted a scattershot of threads all at once and all about Putin, there Nube.

Now if we had a viable leader in this country I’d say let’s stop his aggression. Now in case you haven’t noticed we have our own little dictator who would grab complete control of America in a ny minute and his term ain’t over for 2 years so we must be vigilant. Any foreign activity by our despot is suspect and I question any military action he might take as being on the WRONG SIDE.

For the time being I believe it behoves us to worry about the damage being foisted upon us here at home by this regime and leave Russia for Europe to worry about.

Putin: “I mean, c’mon. Everyone knows non-aggression is good, right?”

“When someone turns a shot gun towards me I will shoot first.” ................ Not the exact words, but it started Operation Barbarossa.

The Katyn massacre (Polish: zbrodnia katyńska, mord katyński, "Katyń crime"; Russian: Катынский расстрел Katynskij ra'sstrel, "Katyn shooting"), was a series of mass executions of Polish nationals carried out by the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD), the Soviet secret police, in April and May 1940. Originally the term "Katyn massacre", also known as the Katyn Forest massacre, referred to the massacre at Katyn Forest, which was discovered first and was the largest execution of this type.

The massacre was prompted by NKVD chief Lavrentiy Beria's proposal to execute all captive members of the Polish Officer Corps, dated 5 March 1940, approved by the Soviet Politburo, including its leader, Joseph Stalin. The number of victims is estimated at about 22,000.[1] The victims were murdered in the Katyn Forest in Russia, the Kalinin and Kharkiv prisons, and elsewhere. Of the total killed, about 8,000 were officers taken prisoner during the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, another 6,000 were police officers, and the rest were arrested Polish intelligentsia the Soviets deemed to be "intelligence agents, gendarmes, landowners, saboteurs, factory owners, lawyers, officials and priests".[1]

Who are we to judge?

It is not a secret that Russia was in a proxy war with Nazi Germany via Spain earlier than ANY of allies.

As far as 1938 Russia was warning free world on Hitler seeking alliance with anyone on block to deal with him but it has fallen on deaf ears.

As for Poland it is not innocent. It has joined Germany in a similar way to dismember Czechoslovakia right before it was attacked itself.

But it has somehow turned to be on a good side with a victim card.

All of the above are known historical facts.

Who are we to judge?

What does that mean, who is "we"? Aren't you a current Russian soldier posting from Russia?

You aren't what we conservatives consider a part of "we", especially as you invade Ukraine and threaten NATO.

I guess you understand that I wasn’t around at the time the pact was arranged and for that reason an outsider like anyone else on this.

That pact was the reason WW2 started when it did.

The moment Hitler got the news he slammed his hand hard down on a table and shouted “we have them!”.

The Soviets got what they deserved when Adolf double-crossed them.

So you really meant to say “who are we active duty members of the Russian Army currently invading Ukraine to judge, and disagree with our ‘president’ for life as NATO is forced even now to make changes to defend Poland from us”?

The moment Hitler got the news he slammed his hand hard down on a table and shouted “we have them!”.

Stalin said the same thing. He thought he was going to get a war in the West, which would destroy the British, French and German armies, and all of Europe would be easy pickings for the Red Army. Of course, one thing he didn't count on...France falling without much of a fight.

I actually don’t like a way ‘president for life’ is managing this crisis and I actually think he led a nation into a kind of an intelligently set trap but I also admit that I don’t know how we could really avoid it.
On the other hand, being wrong on one or another issue doesn’t mean he is wrong all the time.
