Donald Trump may have had a rough week campaigning nationally, but that didn't sway voters at a straw poll sponsored by the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday.
Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton 161 votes to 98 at the Chamber's Political Hob Nob event at Sun 'n Fun.
It was one of 17 straw polls 292 people voted in during the event, which featured brief speeches by local candidates running in the Aug. 30th primary and the Nov. 8 election.
School Board District 2 candidate Ronnie Clark won the closest race, defeating incumbent Lori Cunningham, 101 to 99 in the non-partisan race.
Clark, a pastor at Hurst Chapel AME Church in Winter Haven, received the biggest reception after he spoke.
Clark supporter Kristen Hathcock, a teacher at Dennison Middle School, said Clark, of Haines City, would help provide her school with resources and much-needed funding the school needs.
She said he would help reduce the number of required tests mandated by the Polk County School District.
But Cory Wilson, a Lori Cunningham supporter and theater teacher at Ridge Community, said the incumbent often helps students and teachers at the school. Wilson spoke to the crowd about Cunningham.
"She even comes backstage to help us," Wilson said after his speech. "All the students know her."
Other races weren't as close as the School Board District 2 contest.
Republican Kelli Stargel defeated Democrat Debra Wright, 184 to 98 in the State Senate District 22 race.
Stargel described herself as an accomplished, responsive lawmaker after her brief speech.
But Wright, a former School Board member, said she would listen more to the needs of the voters than Stargel.

Agreed. It was such a goofy sounding poll, just couldn’t help it. Need a little levity in all this seriousness methinks.

Unfortunately, the more Trump talks...the lower his ratings go...he needs to stick to a script and shut up with his personal comments.
Hob Knob is a flea market type event predominately visited by middle aged women looking to buy nick knacks. This is very good news!!!!
Lakeland pretty much represents the coveted I-4 Corridor between Orlando and Tampa. Went for Obama both times, Bush in 00 and 04. I hope this bodes well for November.

I just posted a poll analysis here on FR. The major pollsters, all in DIFFERENT ways, have jimmied the polls:
Reuters completely readjusted its methodology, as it publicly stated, because it didn’t like the results.
ABC and Suffolk (as I learned) are asking for the “youngest voters in the household”. HUH??? That is a massive D+ advantage in every one of their polls.
CNN/ORC, in their 9 point poll, . . . COMPLETELY left out the 20-35 age group. HUH???? on the other hand, they sampled 48% independents. HUH???? That’s a 20 point overpoll.
And on top of every one of those egregious polling errors, every sample I have looked at-—every single one-—over polls Ds, or under polls Rs or Is.
So the bottom line, we have no basis for saying Trump’s “ratings are going down.” We have a bunch of very badly disguised political propaganda polls.
Here is a pretty good one: PPP PA, which only oversamples D by 1 and has Cankles with a 3 point lead with a margin of error of 2.5. What’s that called? A tie. In Pennsylvania. Normally this would be seen as a massive wakeup call for Cankles. But the fact is, it’s one of the few legitimate polls I’ve found anywhere.
I’m not just going by polls....it’s personal people, acquaintances who were on the fence and between the purple heart, and all the other stuff he’s been dissected about, they are hating him! These people were on the fence. The media is tearing him apart for every comment...of course they parse it, lie about it...etc. Even a Jimmy Falon joke he told as if were true was not true the way it was told....and you know fence/sheeple will listen to it. Just worried.
Well, anecdotally you can always prove anything. Anectdotally I couldn’t see how Obama won OH in 2012-—no Obama signs, bumperstickers, etc.
Florida Bellwether county Hillsborough has Trump + 3. They were tied last month.
Hannity saying what i said. Hannity saying everyone he speaks too wish Trunp would now just shut up and stick to a prompter...only talk about progress he will do and about Hillary. Hannity says a poll out tonight has Trump down by 10. My gut says Trump will lose BIG if he doesn’t take Seans advice ASAP to Trump, Hannitty spending quit a bit of time on ‘advice to Trump on what to talk about’.
USC today, a rolling nightly poll, has him up 2-—using 2012 splits. (So he’s probably up 4-5)
