Detroit News endorses ridiculous ticket.
Note: In the interest of disclosure I guess I should mention that I used to be a Detroit News contributor. Not sure why it would matter, but there you go.
You may have read that the Detroit News “for the first time in its 143 history” endorsed a presidential candidate that wasn’t a Republican. Technically that’s true, but the paper also failed to endorse a Republican in 2004, when it refused to lend its support to George W Bush. That’s fine, and it’s their right to do so, but what they did today makes absolutely no sense.
That’s because, instead of endorsing “no one,” they went “NeverTrump” by offering their rubber stamp to an abject joke of a ticket: alleged Libertarians Gary Johnson and Bill Weld.
Is there anyone left in Detroit who could (or would want to) read a newspaper?
Says a lot about Hillary if they endorse Johnson over her!
One leader that he could look up to. In his defense, they seem to be in very short supply.

The News used to be a half-way decent newspaper. Not anymore. Except for their Tigers coverage which is still pretty good and free online.
Frank Beckman was excellent on WJR this morning. He said it was an endorsement for Hillary.
I disagree. The endorsement bleeds votes from Hillary and helps Trump.

Gary Johnson is tanking deliberately because he is supposed to help Hillary, but it hasn’t worked out that way.
I’m getting the feeling Gary has gone as high in electoral popularity as he is ever going to get. From this point on, it may plateau a few weeks more, then dip dramatically after the second debate.

It was a stupid question, though. Why would a candidate play favorites with foreign leaders before even getting elected?
When I think of world leaders, the ones that come first to mind are those I don't particularly respect, after that it's leaders who aren't in power or even alive anymore.
But all Johnson had to do was say, "I'm not going to play favorites." Chris Matthews was a jerk (as usual), demanding an answer to his stupid question and not allowing Johnson to beg off.

The Detroit News and the Free Press literally are the same paper, as neither can survive on their own.
Most papers in Michigan are in this boat. They share so many resources, they are really just the same newspaper with separate small staffs in their respective cities to make sure they look local enough.
All of these newspaper endorsements are FOS. Except for the Arizona Republic who endorsed the last two liberal losers, McCain and Romney. With that record, I don’t think Clintoon is very excited about their endorsement.
I betcha Johnson wouldn’t be at a loss for words if he were asked to name his favorite marijuana strain.
I think they endorsed Johnson because even they couldn’t endorse Clinton but would be murdered if they endorsed Trump.
