Republican congresswoman: My son has a pre-existing condition, and that's why I voted for the AHCA

Counter the narrative

The left/media narrative on people with pre-existing conditions is one of the most dishonest I’ve ever heard. To listen to them, you’d think everyone who is sick will be tossed off their insurance by the AHCA.

Here’s the truth: First, the concern about pre-existing conditions deals solely with people who don’t currently have insurance and want to get it. That is a very small subset of the overall population of people who have some sort of health issue. If you already have insurance, and you’re sick or you get sick, nothing changes for you. The problem is what to do with people who have been going without insurance - or had it but lost it - and now want to get coverage from an insurer that will understand from day one that this person will cost them much more than they will pay in premiums.

From what I gather, the whole “pre-existing condition” debacle is really just a short-term (60 days?) reasonable-cost (X% of normal coverage?) speed bump to encourage people to _stay_ insured without completely screwing them over if they’re not (i.e.: situational break in coverage).

NOBODY is addressing what the bill _actually_ says about pre-existing conditions, they’re just making it out as the worst thing evar.

My take, unlike any other view seen:

Buying insurance is like buying lottery tickets: you probably won’t “win”, but if you do then you get a lifetime monthly payout. Problem is, current system is like requiring you to keep buying lottery tickets to keep the payouts coming, and if you stop once then your monthly payouts end forever - so the group paying “winners” has an incentive to find any excuse to cut off payments.

So, my take is that if you are insured and develop a “condition” then that insurance company should be on the hook for covering that condition for life - just like a lottery pays the winner for life.

Just a thought.

No. For the most part only democrats and their favored 'victim groups' deserve free sh**. Republicans are suppose to pay for it and 'shut the hell up'. There are exceptions - - not many. Thank God.

The AHCA requires that insurance companies provide coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. The AHCA prohibits companies from capping the amount of money that can be paid out over the life of the policy. And the AHCA, according to a Kentucky congressman, prohibits companies from charging those with pre-existing conditions higher premiums. So tell me again how the AHCA will cut premiums in half, if not more?

Only way that is going to happen is with high risk pools. So the question then becomes why would states agree to establish and fund these pools? That same congressman said that people in these pools will not pay higher rates than they paid before, so there is no way they will be self-funding. Congress has appropriated $138 billion over ten years, but only $8 billion of that is specifically identified as high-risk pool money. The other $130 billion is for a host of other purposes. So it's unlikely that the federal funding will come close to paying for the pools and the states will have to pay the rest. What incentive is there for the states to do so?

The argument to be made : the ACA REQUIRES everybody to buy insurance. the new AHCA requires insurance companies to continue to cover anybody who already has coverage, regardless of condition.

SO, the ONLY people who could possibly have a pre-existing condition problem are people who REFUSED TO OBEY the Obamacare mandate.

So the left is arguing for people who rejected their own health care plan.

You have an existing condition. How do you have a pre existing condition?

...up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.

Why wait for the voters? Let the legislators do it.
