Commentary: Don't underestimate Donald Trump
The Chicago Tribune ^ | May 19, 2017 | Ronald A. Klain, Special to the Washington Post

Posted on 05/19/2017 12:53:45 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Last October, we were in the midst of debate preparation for Hillary Clinton when news of the "Access Hollywood" tape broke. The senior Clinton team immediately wondered what the event's impact would be. Would there still be a debate two days later? Would Donald Trump show up? Would his running mate, Mike Pence, take his place? How could Trump survive?

Trump not only showed up for the St. Louis debate that Sunday, he stood on the stage and told Clinton that if it were up to him she'd "be in jail." Ten days later, Trump insisted at the Las Vegas debate that allegations made against him by nine women of groping and other unwelcome physical contact were so baseless that he "didn't even apologize to [his] wife" for his actions. Twenty days after that, Trump was elected president of the United States.

The lesson: It is dangerous to underestimate Trump's survival skills. And so, as the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the Russia mess has Washington buzzing with nascent impeachment talk, 25th Amendment scenarios and rumors about resignation, it is worth remembering how tenaciously Trump pursued power, along with five key assets he has to maintain his grip on it.....

. . . And fifth, there is the frightening risk that Trump's die-hard supporters are more devoted to Trump than they are to the rule of law. The United States prides itself on being "a government of laws, not of men," but polls show that an increasing number of Americans generally, and Trump supporters specifically, have "lost faith in democracy."

It's completely amazing that anybody could write this with a straight face after watching the performance of the Democrats since the election.

Look at who he is. They always accuse us of what they’re up to.

Spoken as if the "Rule of Law" has been strictly observed. If it had, Madam Benghazi, the kenyan usurper, Susan Rice and others would be in Supermax or GITMO.

Trump is truly finding out who his "friends" are, and I seriously doubt that he will forget those trying to knife him in the back.

Started to read it then got sick, then angry or was it the other way around. Anyway, anything from the WP or affiliates is trash. For example:

“The lesson: It is dangerous to underestimate Trump’s survival skills......

First, while he is proving to be an incompetent president...”

My Read: Every time someone from the MSM says Trump is incompetent or doesn’t know what he is doing, I say “He’s the President, a billionaire, working and making deals, you aren’t”.

Another “Trump is a poopy-head” diatribe but this one says “but he is a crafty poopy-head.”

Nothing new here.

Yep. Trump didn’t’ get to where he was by being “stupid” like most politicians.
He’s had to deal with some pretty slimy individuals over the years.
He’s a shrewd businessman and rest assured, he’ll be handing back the knife to them in a way they’ll not soon forget.

But isn’t that something of an improvement from “Trump doesn’t even know that Andrew Jackson wasn’t alive during the Civil War” articles?

I have never had any faith in ‘democracy’ and consider it a dirty word.

If there was a ‘rule of law’ I might respect it, but these days there seems to be more ‘rule’ than ‘law.’ And the rule seems to be that the Left can what it pleases to anyone it wishes without consequences. So, if the rule of law is not longer respected is because its enforcement has become a travesty and a farce.

The level of Evil, Stupidity or Delusion here is beyond any question. I’m sorry to say so but this can’t end well.

“Look at who he is. They always accuse us of what they’re up to.”

Just like Pravda during the Soviet era - if you wanted to know what they were doing, just look at what they accused us of doing.

As for “look at who he is,” Trump is a VERY sharp guy who got laughed at at Wharton (probably the 2nd best B-school in the country, and the only one then offering anything in real estate) when he said that he wanted to be “the king of NYC real estate” - and then he did exactly that. He displayed incredible imagination, tenacity and an ability to hammer together deals - in the face of great political opposition and the opposition of better-funded and better-connected competition - and that is what made him a multi-billionaire starting from a $1 million loan. Trump has often been underestimated, yet comes out on top ALWAYS. Only a fool bets against him...and now this guy is working for US. He doesn’t need to make money or make a reputation, he just wants to turn around the ship of state and make this country more prosperous. Compared to some of what he’s done already, that’s not too difficult.

Nothing like making a damning statement and failing to provide examples. How exactly did McMcaster compromise is credibility - by asserting what happened in a meeting with Russians that he attended?

This is purely a spiritual attack. We need some Knights of the Cross out there defending.
