I first heard the term “basic income” in the socialist magazine Dissent in 2005. I was a 15-year-old leftist …I am sorry you got off to such a miserable start, Mr. Matthews. You still have time to wake up to the truth.
Welfare is a universal minimal income.
It hasn’t fixed a thing.
No it wouldn’t.
Whatever the ‘basic’ income is will buy you a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter ... if you’re lucky.
All the other incomes above ‘basic’ will rise to be what will buy the same stuff as today.
Complete dolts in this country canno think themselves out of a wet paper bag.
So called poverty will just get worse with the more public welfare that is applied, whatever you want to call it
Yeah, I know I would take a Janitorial job if there was a “Basic Income”. College kids that come up with such nonsense live in a Fairy tale world
Why stop at a “basic income”? Why not go for a “fantastically elaborate income”?
[Caveat: I think that caring for the poor is an essential part of godly living. I just grew up during the days of East and West Germany and noticed the different outcomes of the two different systems. The “middle class” in East Germany were poorer than the “poor” in West Germany. Still, I’m always open to great ideas for helping the poor. This just doesn’t seem to be one of those great ideas.]
And just WHO is going to actually PAY enough in taxes ( surely NOT the Tech billionaires....they don't part with a dime, unless there's some payoff )to pay for this garbage ?

Dissent survive the 1950s so-called “witchhunt”. Why didn’t they ever go to Communist countries and urge THEM to reform their systems with liberal changes to be more Utopian? Why only attack the Capitalist West for over half a century?

The meek shall inherit the earth but then hypocritical fat pigs like Dead Red Ted Kennedy will see to it that they lose their inheritance in taxes to the State (his own family’s estate and his were shielded against such confiscation).

More of the world’s low skilled impoverished will come to the Western nations for handouts. It’s been happening for decades and is an unsustainable business model.
And they claim that they are only here for the jobs that no one else wants and then they want to send their kids to colleges at the instate tuition rate to get them degrees to get jobs no one wants? or do they then start competing with the locals for jobs that they did want but can no longer get?
Oh, and here’s an idea, because children are the poorest, pay kids a bazillion dollars a year to encourage only the bestest parents to breed more children, right?
Because single mom households have done so well since the 60s.
I have an answer. Do a basic job and get a basic income.
Want Money? Figure it out. This is America.
Do what you do. If it is nothing, then don’t bother me.
Here is what would happen in Reality. Five young guys each with a “Basic Income” of $12,000 or combined $60,000, would reant an apartment and be on Safari to stay.
No. But success was never an issue. As long as we subsidize it then we will be creating green jobs.
This whole concept is silly. Trump can end poverty tomorrow.
Just change the definition - it is already an entirely subjective mark which is not, AT ALL, based on what folks a couple generations back would call poverty.
I would define it as homeless and / or starving.
Folks with three TVs, an iPhone for each, beer and food in the fridge, an air conditioned roof over head and a butt that gets mail in two zip codes... are not in poverty.
It is a relative definition today. It can't be eliminated without eliminating variance in income and wealth.
The whole topic is something for the states to decide anyway, not the feds.
