BURLINGTON — Ryan Roy, an employee at Uno Pizzeria and Grill in South Burlington was fired after participating in white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia, that turned violent last weekend. Social media users identified Roy as a participant after he appeared in a Vice News report on the events in Charlottesville. Roy is seen carrying a torch and chanting white supremacist slogans in the video.

Roy’s involvement in the rallies and employment status at the local restaurant was first reported by the Burlington Free Press.

Skip Weldon, the Boston-based restaurant’s chief marketing officer, confirmed to multiple media outlets on Wednesday that Roy had been terminated. Weldon did not return calls from VTDigger on Wednesday seeking additional comment.

People reached out to the pizza chain via social media, after discovering that Roy worked at the Shelburne Road location.

The news that Roy, a Burlington resident, was involved in the Charlottesville events sparked backlash on Twitter.

Roy, 28, confirmed to the Free Press on Tuesday that he had attended multiple events in Charlottesville, including a rally that protested the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Attempts by VTDigger to reach Roy for comment were unsuccessful.

The Essex High School graduate had worked at Uno as a cook since 2016.

Roy has told the Free Press and Seven Days that he supports segregation and the concept of a white nation.

“Obviously I would advocate for racial separation and racial nationalism or repatriation or even a return to — our country was a white country up until the 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act,” Roy told the Free Press.

The legislation removed quotas that favored Northern European immigrants.

In the state of Vermont, workers can be fired for any reason that is not legally prohibited, such as race, gender or national origin.

Roy told Seven Days that he once was liberal, and his views evolved over time.

“I became more conservative as I became more informed, read more — and that’s where I am now,” Roy said. “I’m a person who’s interested in reading, who’s interested in learning so I’m always refining my opinions and ideas as I learn new information.”

Roy told Seven Days reporter Sasha Goldstein, who is Jewish, that he was concerned that he would lie about him.

“That tends to be what your ethnic group does,” Roy told Goldstein.

A number of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and other groups gathered in Charlottesville Friday and Saturday to protest the removal of the Confederate general’s statue. The rallies included events where hundreds of participants carried tiki torches and conducted Nazi salutes, while carrying a variety of weapons, according to police.

Violence broke out when the white supremacists encountered opposition groups that had formed a counter-protest.

Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old woman, was killed when a white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of anti-Nazi protesters. Dozens more were injured.

Two Virginia State Police troopers were also killed when their helicopter crashed while providing support to officers on the ground during the conflict.

James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio has been charged with second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of hit and run.

Notice that all these guys seem to have some low level fast food restaurant type job? (Not that there’s anything wrong with working in a restaurant!) Not exactly the high achiever kind of people.
