Today’s post is in honor of Marine Sgt. Foster L. Harrington, who gave his life for our country on this day in 2003. Harrington, a 31-year-old native of Ft. Worth, Tex., was killed by enemy action in Iraq’s Anbar province. He was serving with the 3rd Force Reconnaissance Company, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve.

1777: British Maj. Gen. Charles Grey launches a daring nighttime attack on Brig. Gen. Anthony Wayne’s Continental Army forces encamped near the Paoli Tavern near modern-day Malvern, Pa.. Grey orders his troops to only use bayonets, and has his men remove the flints from their rifles. The Redcoats catch the Americans completely by surprise, routing an entire division while only suffering 11 British casualties.

1797: (Featured image) The Continental Navy frigate Constitution is launched in Boston harbor. 220 years later, USS Constitution – known affectionately as “Old Ironsides” – is the “oldest ship in the American Navy,” and continues serving in the 21st century as a duly commissioned ship crewed by active-duty U.S. sailors and Naval officers in order to further public awareness of American Naval tradition.

1917: The 26th Infantry Division arrives at Saint-Nazaire, France, becoming the first division entirely organized in the United States to arrive in Europe for World War I. The National Guard soldiers immediately travel to Neufchâteau, where they are trained by experienced French soldiers. The “Yankee” Division will spend 210 days in combat, with 1,587 killed in action and another 12,077 soldiers wounded.

1944: Just three days after landing, the 81st Infantry Division has eliminated most of the Japanese garrison on the island of Angaur. Once the island is secured, the 81st will join the 1st Marine Division in the bloody battle on Peleliu, only seven miles away...

"Old Ironsides" still sails today, 221 years after being launched.

She sits in a harbor. She “sails” very rarely. And there’s little left of the original ship after numerous renovations.

But she’s still an awesome sight, and a proud reminder of American naval history.

Just an aside, when I read Commiskey in the headline, I remembered Obama making the mistake of calling the White Sox ballpark ‘Cominskey’. At the time I thought, ‘did he ever even live in Chicago? NO ONE who ever lived in Chicago would call that ballpark Cominskey’. Ok, now I will read the story.....thanks for posting.

Yeah, I imagine she’s like the farmer with the 80-year-old axe; the handle has been replaced a dozen times and the head has been replaced 5 times. Still impressive that we have a ship that still works from the 18th Century. It’s kind of like how the Russians still try to threaten us with throwback propeller-driven bombers, but way cooler.

Yeah, I imagine Obama knows about as much about baseball as I know about basketball... but I don’t pretend to be a fan. And at least I can throw a baseball from the mound to the catcher without bouncing.

Old Ironsides does a ‘turnaround’ once a year. And she is fully staffed with Navy personnel, at all times. And she really is an awesome sight.

The Constitution was the basis of French privateer “Acheron” from the movie “Master and Commander: Far Side of the World”. In the original novel the bad guy was an American frigate, based on the USS Essex.

She usually goes out on the fourth of July for a turn-around so that she weathers evenly.

She is a pretty small vessel. Cannot imagine spending a LOT of time at sea on her.

Obie likes the word to have an “n” in it, like “communist”.

Old Ironsides does a ‘turnaround’ once a year. And she is fully staffed with Navy personnel, at all times.

When I served in the early 1960s it never dawned on me to request an assignment to her or another of the few heritage ships still manned by Navy crews.

I built a model of the Constitution when I was a kid. It was a big one — very detailed. I knew every line, halyard, lanyard, stay, spar, yard, and sail on that ship. I could still probably name most of them.

My dad, who had an 8th-grade education, could recite the Oliver Wendell Holmes poem by heart.”Aye, tear her tatter’d ensign down ...”
