Do you have experience and equipment for building a precision weapon? If not, buy a good one.

Dad had a mini machine shop and built several weapons but said that a good pre-made one always seems to be more reliable and had better performance....I've never built one but know that if any machining is required, it's easy to "miss it by that much"...

If you have the materials to build one, and enjoy that sort of work, go ahead,,,but maybe buy a ready-made one and compare results.

Unless you buy an 80% lower and finish it yourself, the lower will have a serial number and require a 4473. The feds wont have a record of that specific configuration, but will know you are in possession of a lower receiver.

“Not sure why you would even sell a gun to a jerk-off like that. “

He told me after the fact. I would have walked away if I knew he was such a dingus.

No snarky comments here.

Check this out. I have the FX-9 carbine. Great shooter. The FX-9 pistol is similar but smaller.

https://freedomordnance.com/fx-9-pistol/

Check out all the AR compatibility. And it takes Glock mags. For my carbine I have 7 Glock mags (the real article, not some Korean junk) and all the mags work fine.

I’m very satisfied with this firearm.

Loads of youtube videos on the FX-9 pistol.

I can retire shortly and will be moving south.

South Carolina will welcome you with open arms. Lots of folks I know, myself included, have built backyard shooting galleries.

After buying tools and specing out all the parts you’ll find there isn’t much savings in building it yourself. Buying one built means you get to shoot it right away, but building one will pay off in other ways and tool costs will benefit any future builds and changes or repairs you might do, You’ll have to weigh that out for yourself.

The factory option has advantages and may be the best first step and can be a good reference piece while you build a second one down the road.

Definitely go with the Glock platform and CMMG is a good company that has been making great ARs for quite a while. Will second the suggestion to absorb info on building standard ARs, Pistol ARs, and pistol caliber ARs at AR15.com.

You discredit yourself because you are posting pictures of an AR-9 SBR but you comment that you want an AR-9 pistol. Full stocked firearms with barrels shorter than 16 inches or overall length less than 26 inches are classified SBR’s and require the Form 4 and a six month minimum waiting period minimum before you get the tax stamp. As far as a profile from 2001 doesn’t mean squat. I question why you want to build an impractical firearm and then misrepresent your intent. Popo officers and Army officers have the answers to your questions at their disposal. If you are as such you wouldn’t be asking Freepers for advice but the people you work with.

To me the idea of a 9mm on an AR platform is a bad idea. It makes much more sense to get say a Glock 17L with the solid barrel.

Of course if you want one that is reason enough.

You have shown yourself to be very misinformed. That is not a “full stocked” firearm in the picture I posted. It is an arm brace and not meant to be fired from the shoulder. Therefore it is classified as a pistol. Stop embarrassing yourself and trying to discredit me and my intentions for asking FReepers for advice.

“My question is, should I buy one or should I undertake the task of building one?”

If the gun is for defense do yourself a favor and just buy it. Building is fine for a fun project, but what happens if doesn’t work? Figuring out what went wrong yourself can be a huge PITA vs just sending it back under warranty.

Just amazing the same day Swalwell makes a proposal to eradicate all “Assault Weapons” and those who refuse to surrender them will be criminally prosecuted. Again why would a person even use Freepers for advice on firearms, especially a supposed Popo and Army reservist? There are better forums to get advice on firearms. Just doesn’t make much since to this old hillbilly and I am sure when someone analyzes your post they will come to the same conclusion. You would have been better off changing your profile to “I am Bubba from Toadsuck, AR”. People would have bought that story.

Ok that’s not about arm braces. It’s about bump stocks. Also there’s a retraction on that web page.

What you got right was that it’s about an accessory that ATF reversed itself on. Thanks for discussing.

If you purchase a stripped lower, it can be used for a rifle or a pistol build. A 1911 lower frame carries the serial number, and it, too needs to be transferred through an FFL. Whichever part of the firearm that has a serial number is the portion that needs the FFL transfer. A Ruger semi auto .22 pistol, for instance has the serial number on the upper half, So the upper half of that firearm is the portion that needs the FFL transfer.

No, what I’m saying is that if you fab one up from either scratch or an 80% build or whatever.

I have a 1911 80% blank that has no numbers on it. As I understand it, and many people have done this, when I mill it out and finish it it doesn’t need a number.

So I figure the same concept applies to the AR pistol. If you get an 80% lower, finish it, and then slap on some pistol spec parts I would think that it wouldn’t need a number either.

I believe you are right, If it is not complete, you can complete it yourself without having to have a number.

My problem is I have zero workspace. I live in a small apartment in NYC, and I only have tools necessary to hang pictures on my walls. At this point I may purchase a complete firearm that meets my criteria while developing a solid plan for building an AR9/AR15 in the future.

I think you are moving in the right direction if this is the weapon that you want. Build up, ammo up, store supplies and hunker down.

Elections are not going to fix what is broke in this country.

Yep, an on target double tap is next to impossible.

Yeah and with a 9MM, what I call a squat to pee round (no offense ladies but I think there are "men" out there that do this), you better get ready for it.
