A recession in 2020 would hurt Trump, but it wouldn’t necessarily sink his reelection

President Trump is running for reelection on the strength of the economy as concerns spread about slowing growth.

While Trump may not have to worry about a recession just yet, history shows it could make his push for another term in the White House a lot harder.

Only two presidents since World War II — Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter — have run for reelection in the same year as a recession. Truman won, Carter lost.

A recession would require the Democratic contender...whoever it is...to lay out their path to ending the recession. They would have go go and ‘sound-like’ a Republican. From Warren, Biden and the ‘team’....it would be difficult to go and convince people that their plan or strategy (more taxes) would halt the recession. Trump would point the blame at the Fed, and suggest they are incompetent and the primary fault.

If there’s a recession, I’m thinking it will be one orchestrated to happen at a certain to do as much damage as possible to the President’s re-election. Problem with that is, the moves that will be made will be out there for all the world to see. When that happens the President will pounce on these people and destroy them.

He’ll be able to put the blame exactly where it lies and it will boomerang on the conspirators.

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2019/08/ex-federal-reserve-official-bill-dudley-calls-on-fed-to-manipulate-economy-to-stymie-trumps-reelection/

Central bank officials face a choice: enable the Trump administration to continue down a disastrous path of trade war escalation, or send a clear signal that if the administration does so, the president, not the Fed, will bear the risks — including the risk of losing the next election.

Interesting excerpt. I didn’t think the US was supposed to have a, Central Bank, like they do in other countries. I thought the US government was supposed to set monetary policy and mint currency, not some unaccountable group of private bankers.

And now, it appears, manufacturers in China are admitting that their livelihoods depend on access to the US....

Exporters in China’s manufacturing heartlands also express growing annoyance at US government and buyers, vowing to find new markets .... poor babies. They’re getting annoyed because the US is finding someplace else to get their stuff..

FACT versus TRUTH

The U.S. economy was in expansion from Oct. 1945 to Nov. 1948. Truman did NOT run for election in 1948 during a recession.

https://www.nber.org/cycles.html

There was talk of a recession in 1947, but no such thing happened. Because of the surprising strength of the economy, Truman caught up to Dewey and scored an upset victory.

Nixon, as VP, ran for election in 1960, during a recession and lost.

As stated, Carter ran for re-election in 1980, during a recession and lost.

McCain, as the nominee for the Republicans, ran for election in 29008, and lost.

You could also mention the lack of a vigorous recovery from the preceding recession as a reason for Bush’s loss in 1992.

There is indeed a strong correlation between economic conditions as the performance of the incumbent party in Presidential elections. It’s not the only factor. But, it is a strong factor.

This is why the Democrats have been talking recession for three years now, when they’re not saying the credit really goes to Obama, or that “not everybody” is doing well.

The Democrats’ problem is that they have to run somebody.

If there is a recession Trump loses. Game over. Dems answer would be more freebies.

What a lot of my fellow Trump supporters forget is that the country is not like it was, the demographics are changing rapidly.

109 counties in 22 states from California to North Carolina went from majority white to majority nonwhite since 2000, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of Census data.

Now before i get accused of being racist the reason this is important is that the block voting the Dems go for is built on freebies and they are trying to get the 70% of Hispanic voters they get now to be more like the black 95% vote. The only response we have had to these freebies has been a healthy economy.

Need more proof:
Just look at the states won by Trump,he won 32 states but only 4 have a population of Hispanic voters over 13%. Clinton by contrast won 28 states and only 5 had a Hispanic population of under 13%.

In CA, the Hispanic Population is now about 40% (and yes fueled by illegal immigrants and higher birth rate )and African American 12%. Whites are under 45% and falling

This demographic shift and resulting block voting trend is what is going on in early stages in Nevada, Az, Fl and now Texas. Colorado is now over 20% Hispanic and now a dem state, Nevada over 29% and voting solidly blue. I believe this is why the dems are for illegal immigration-it gets them votes and power.
.

While whites remain the largest racial or ethnic group nationwide, they now account for only 60% of all Americans, 109 counties in 22 states went from majority white to majority nonwhite since 2000, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of Census data.

The study looked only at the counties with a minimum population of 10,000 in 2018, but those counties represent 77% of the nation’s 3,142 counties and include 99% of the population.

So I am praying for trade deal and no recession

Obama’s economy under-performed, and he was re-elected by a narrow margin. The economy was growing, but not enough to improve things for the middle class. Trump moved us from second gear into overdrive.

Do not accept the demographics. That’s the way Democrats think. They think race makes the man. We’re Republicans. We think each man makes himself. No doubt, one’s background plays a role. But, we believe in free will, personal accountability, and judging people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. Because we believe in free will and personal accountability, we believe in enforcing the law, and we believe in forgiveness and reconciliation. People can change. Yes, that gets harder with age. But, people can and do turn around. Let’s pray that as many of our fellow citizens as possible take advantage of our Trump economy.

dems and their willing assistants in the media will be watching the DOW carefully, and when it goes down, they will sound the alarm and repeat “recession” thousands of times.

It goes up, and it goes down. The DOW is not the single index of the entire US economy. It is the weighted average of the most recent transaction price for a basket of stocks. It does not take into account the number of stocks bought or sold, only the last recorded transaction price.

a recession would hurt the leftists and the big state for the word on the ground is that they engineered it to take down Trump and that the lives and livlihoods of the common people were sacrified to do it so the leftists and big state could retain power.

Thank you for this post. A recession is likely, but Trump has defied conventional political wisdom. I had forgotten about Truman’s victory in 48. That is an encouraging reminder.

We need to push harder than ever for DJT in 2020. The future of the republic is riding on it.

More non-RINO republicans in the House and Senate would help, too, to offset Mittens, Collins, and whatever traitor of the month emerges.
