Bernie's climate play: A federal takeover of electricity production. Sanders wants federally owned utilities to build massive amounts of wind and solar to compete with private generators

Sen. Bernie Sanders has put nationalizing health insurance at the center of his presidential campaign, but his proposal to fight climate change also calls for a government takeover of a fundamental segment of the economy — electricity production.

Sanders has laid out a $16 trillion climate change plan that would transition U.S. electricity generation away from fossil fuels to renewable resources like wind, solar and hydropower by 2030. That’s far faster than any other Democratic candidate's target and sets a pace that rivals like former Vice President Joe Biden say is unrealistic.

And like Sanders' healthcare plan, the green energy push would muscle many of the country's biggest companies out of the business.

A Sanders administration would pour funding into the four existing "power marketing administrations" that are overseen by the Energy Department, as well as the Tennessee Valley Authority and one newly created entity, to vastly expand their solar, wind and geothermal power production. Those organizations currently provide power from hydroelectric dams to 33 states, and would be able to sell the increased green energy to local utilities nationwide — creating a sort of "public option" that would compete with the coal, natural gas and nuclear plants owned by privately owned power generators.

But critics say that government expansion won't sit well in many parts of the country, including some places Democrats will need to defeat President Donald Trump.

“What the Sanders proposal would do is create an 800-pound federally owned power gorilla that would make it very hard for the existing generators to compete,” said Josh Freed, head of energy and climate policy at Third Way, a centrist think tank that opposes the Sanders plan. “I think a plan like this could turn off voters in large parts of the country.”

The Crescent Dunes solar power plant wasted $727 million. Under Sanders, multiply that by 1,000 or 10,000.

There isn’t enough land in the US to accommodate the forests of windmills and acres of solar panels needed to supply even half of our electric needs and without some type of backup like gas turbines or nuclear plants that can quickly come online to meet demand when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine blackout will be common.

Yeah, that’s what we need: Advice on energy production from a child (yes, child) who’s never had a real job and could not even pass a “Science for Poets) course in a community college.

Northeastern and California liberals want to fill flyover America with endless seas of wind turbines to spare the Blue Archipelago from having to generate its own electricity, which liberals think is the only acceptable power source to use but which is too dirty to make.

I would prefer to insist that each state by required to be self sufficient in electricity. If New York, Massachusetts and California want to cover themselves with wind turbines, so be it. If they don't want to clear cut their forests to make way for wind farms, they can choose between coal fired plants, natural gas fired plants, nuclear plants, or unicorn farts. If they choose the latter, let them freeze in the dark.

This is incredibly dangerous. It would take the economy and living standards back decades. The Germans are trying it, and energy poverty is a thing.

A major problem with wind and solar is a night with little wind. You then have next to no power. So you need virtually 100% quick reacting backup sources. Now you are maintaining two systems. If you start adding back ups like batteries, you then get three systems to maintain.

They won’t be selling much energy because the demand for it will plummet due to Bernie’s destructive economic policies.
