Mel Gibson, Hungary, And The Sense Of Normal
The American Conservative ^ | 10 Dec 2021 | Mariann Ory

Good news for Budapest, the new safe haven for Western conservatives: Mel Gibson came to town. Around the end of November, locals were happy to see the famous actor around the city. Everybody knows Mel Gibson, and Hungary is no exception. The movie star was in Hungary’s capital to film the John Wick prequel series, The Continental.

When browsing the U.S. press for recent articles about him, though, I bumped into some very intriguing headlines. “How Does Mel Gibson Still Have a Career?,” Variety asked. “Mel Gibson Is Living Proof That ‘Cancel Culture’ Is Mostly Bullshit,” the Daily Beast concluded.

The militants of cancel culture are always shocked when their methods don’t work. Over the years, so much effort has been wasted on trying to cancel Mel Gibson, but to their horror, people still like him. How dare they?

The thing is, normal people around the globe like good actors and good movies. And by “good” I don’t mean woke, but something that you can actually enjoy. There were times when the main purpose of movies and series was not indoctrination. Now if you watch any random new series or movie on the streaming platforms, you realize that everything is secondary when compared to the big ideological message. And it’s not much fun, really.

In the above-mentioned Variety article, Howard Bragman, longtime Hollywood crisis manager, correctly pointed out that “you have to separate the PC police from the moviegoing public.” He went on to say, “Mel Gibson has not had a career without controversy and through it all, he’s been incredibly resilient. Right, wrong or indifferent, his fans have not left him—and I don’t think they’re going to leave him now.”

I called Budapest a safe haven for Western conservatives; but, of course, I know this is not the reason they’re shooting The Continental here, but rather because Hungary is a popular movie location. Nevertheless, if Mel Gibson walks around Budapest, he can experience something that’s natural for the locals but remarkable for many conservative expats: a sense of normal.

Budapest is one of the nicer large cities in Europe. Not kidding, the lead story one night on Hungarian national news was about a Priest being robbed of the silver used for communion. National news, not local.

What counts for a dangerous neighborhood in Budapest means you might have someone pick your pocket.

That same sense of normal prevails in a lot of red states as well. It’s the deep blue cities that are lunatic asylums.

Well, it’s not like Mel SHOT AND KILLED SOMEONE and WOUNDED ANOTHER on a movie set or anything. I mean, he’d be in BIG TROUBLE for something like THAT!

Wait. What...? ;)

Brilliant director, but serious anger and bi-polar issues. Still wondering if he will ever sequel The Passion of the Christ?

Mel has a career because he produces great movies. It is simple. Hollywood produces trash. So, we prefer to watch a Mel Gibson movie even if the critics don’t.

“There were times when the main purpose of movies and series was not indoctrination”

Looking at old TV series’ with today’s open eyes you see a lot of indoctrination back in the sixties and maybe even into the 50s.

My favorite TV show from the 60s “Combat!!!” always scripted.to indoctrinate something in every one of those episodes. Wagon Train, Rawhide...

Shakespearean themes in modern settings, or quality re-makes staying fairly true as rather pleasent as Shakespeare treated all with refreshingly equal defilement.

That sounds good. I'll be looking forward to it.

He is an anti-Semite, because? He believes that the head of the biggest religion in Jerusalem, connived to murder Jesus Christ, the founder of Christianity? It is just the truth.

He was arrested for driving drunk I think. The arresting officer was clearly Asian, yet Mel asked him if he was Jewish too. That always struck me as a bad joke, by a man who had been smeared and reviled by Semites, Jews and Gentiles as an anti-Semite. They even brought up that his Father was an anti-Semite. It seems to me that he had a pretty good reason to assume many people against him were these same Semites, Jews and Gentiles who were constantly on the attack against him. THEY were anti Mel Gibson, and he reacted.

Find out who you cannot criticize, and I show you your masters. Blacks, border jumpers, trannies, queers, mooslums and Jews. It seems like white anglo saxon protestants and Catholics are bottom dwellers. Even the Catholic church treats other than Caucasians as more valuable. Protestant Churches are now welcoming in the alphabet people, turning their pews into mosques at times. Yes, we caucasian Christians are shark bait at this time in History.

Been to Hungary 2 times back in the Eighties while under Soviet rule…got to sing with Continental Singers in the big St. Matthias Catholic Church! Built in or around the 12 th century, it was beautiful, worth a trip for those who love. Rich, historical places!

Mel is a practing Catholic who believes in God. Jewish people who many, not all, have no attachment to religion other than cultural events. Just as many Christians don’t really believe but they practice the societal rituals. Mel’s antisemit remarks were about precieved Jewish control in Hollywood; his drunken triad did reveal him to hate Jewish people but rather some he reasoned to be roadblocks or gatekeepers. Mel doesn’t hate Jews. I spent two years living in Isreal when that happened and there they distinguished between that rant and actual antisemitism.
