A cyberattack has caused major disruptions at hospitals in multiple U.S. states, forcing emergency rooms to close and ambulances to be rerouted.
The attack targeted Calif.-based Prospect Medical Holdings, which has healthcare facilities in California, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas.
“Upon learning of this, we took our systems offline to protect them and launched an investigation with the help of third-party cybersecurity specialists,” the company said in a statement, according to The Associated Press. “While our investigation continues, we are focused on addressing the pressing needs of our patients as we work diligently to return to normal operations as quickly as possible.”

Thank goodness national security is in the hands of the diverse.
If someone or country wanted to really cripple the USA with a cyberattack the three areas I expect to get attacked are air traffic control systems, financial systems and the electrical grid, take those three areas down for an extended period of time and the country would resort to anarchy quickly
1st step - small independent businesses
2nd step - hospitals with links to everywhere with a little disruption in health care as a bonus
3rd step - US banking
4th step - the US government itself for the win

I’ve seen what people are like during power outages when they can’t make their morning cup of coffee.
Take down the electrical grid for 6 months or more and not only would the country be total disarray but millions would be dead
Food couldn’t be delivered, drugs that keep people alive would go away, etc., people would die
I read the book *One Second After*.
I do realize there is debate about the effect and EMP would have on the electrical grid and some people just obsess about that argument to dismiss the book.
However, the rest of the book, the breakdown of society and the scenarios you give examples of, are dealt with well in the book and give one a LOT of food for thought.
ATC systems are usually air-gapped.
Financial systems aren’t as susceptible as people think.
However, you’re spot on with the electrical grid. Also vulnerable are water treatment plants, manufacturing plants, and transportation, specifically rail. It’s not if, it’s when.
We discuss the “assume breach” mentality with organizations across the country, and it’s troubling how few take it seriously.
Hacking doesn’t necessarily mean someone in China with a laptop, human engineering is the way to get someone on the side to help take it down same for the financial system, I’ve worked for a couple of companies with worldwide networks where I had full administrative access to every device in the network.
We had a guy one time who nearly got fired for opening a company email with a virus attached which would have given someone access to the network, the company had a worldwide network which would have created real panic if it went offline for an extended period of time
Did you ever read about the Stuxnet virus that supposedly was jointly developed by Israel and the USA to penetrate the Iranian nuclear industry, everything was air gapped and the virus was released in the areas that were suspected of actively by infecting Iranian scientists on their home computers and have them carry the virus to the inside air gapped network
Anyone doing this, putting lives in danger, should receive the death penalty when caught.

Number 1 suspect unfortunately would be the US gov.
That’s the thing that makes cyberattacks so dangerous, countries can get into offensive cyber operations for a relatively small amount of money compared to a new Aircraft Carrier or Fighter Jet, you don’t need that many people, the attacks can be carried from anywhere and you have some degree of plausible deniability.
Recently here on FR, we’ve had threads about the moon landings being faked and 9/11 being an inside job, I’ve even had people tell me planes didn’t actually hit the WTC Towers, I don’t believe any of that.
The number of people needed to carry out a massive cyberattack is so small, it could easily be concealed and USA being on the top of the suspect list would not be surprising to me.
