FReeper help needed: Posting pics and links on FreeRepublic (New Year's Resolution)
Me | January 1, 2004 | Me

Posted on 01/01/2004 7:21:26 AM PST by Land_of_Lincoln_John

Hello! I've been a FReeper for 2 1/2 years, and modestly stated, I think a pretty good one. However, I've never quite figured out how to post pics and HTML links here. Yes, I've looked at the Help Page here, but still can't grasp it.

This is one of my New Year's resolutions.

I'm somewhat computer literate, and I have the book, "Learning HTML in 24 Hours." (The title of this book is a lie, by the way).

Can anyone give a hand to a fellow FReeper??

Happy New Year!!!

Right mouse click on the pix you want to post. A drop down box will show up with "Properties" as an option. Click on Properties and another box will open.

Highlight and copy the URL address of the pix that shows up in the new box. (I find it is often easier to open another window of my browser and work between the two windows in posting pix.)

Go back to your post message and type EXACTLY this:

< img src =

then put a quotation mark " and paste in the url followed by another quotation mark" and finally close the tag with this sign >. And hit preview. It should post. NOTE: there should not be a space between the < and img src. I have to put one there in order to get the instructions to post to you. :^) Good luck!

I had to give you the instructions in three posts; otherwise I would be creating a link (which we don't want). Try it, and let me know if it works.

Happy new year.

I'm a real HTML beginner, and only know a few tricks. Other than bold, italics, underline, linking, and posting photos I have to look up whatever code I want.

This is a place to practice and refine your skills.

And here is a link that shows how to link pages and at the bottom leads you to another page that discusses how to link to pictures. One thing that stumped me for awhile with pics is that you have to 'host' the picture somewhere. Apparently it's considered bad netiquette to use someone elses bandwidth to post a picture. Someone suggested to me Shutterfly as a free place online to host the photos. I"m sure there are others.

Finally if you see something on a web page that you like and would like to copy...go to "view" and choose "source". Then you can find the HTML code that does the special effect you like.

Have fun!

You mention you've consulted the help page, so I don't know if you've been here. It did the trick for me.

A simple image posting command is:

Title Goes here

but replace [ with < and ] with >

Here's a simple example:

Zatoichi!

And here's the result:

Zatoichi!

You can also put it on the right or left or center it be using the commands like

Zatoichi!

Here's a screen capture of "balrog666"'s image link. (Didn't know how to do it otherwise). The first is the image link alone. The second will show the image, but to the left of the screen. The third is with the command to center the image, as I've done.

Y'all should learn how to show others how to do html without resorting to extra spaces, using '[' characters in place of '<', three posts in place of one, or (first time I've seen that trick for this purpose) screen captures.

To show someone some html, it's two steps:

 1. Write it out as you want them to see it.
 2. Replace each '<' character with the four characters '<'.

For example, if you want them to see:

Then you type instead:

To make a link say to the FreeRepublic web page, write: The template, for a generic link and title, is:

If you find an image that is already visible on the web, and by using the right click menu as someone else explained above, you can figure out the URL for that image, then you can display that image in your post by writing:

For example, to display the picture shown earlier in this thread, write:

Displaying an image that is on your local computers disk (perhaps a picture you took with a digital camera) is harder. First you have to find some web server to upload the picture to, so that it can be seen by others. Perhaps your ISP allows you some publically visible storage. Then you make the link as above, pointing to your uploaded image.

By the way, the image on your Freeper home page is only visible to you, if anyone. The rest of us see only: I suspect that there is no practical way to display images stored on ImageStation in a FreeRepublic posting or home page. You'd probably have to find some other place to put a copy of the image.

sigh It's happened before. They're either accessible or not. Used to be they accepted .gif's, and now they don't, blah blah.

I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to run, not walk, away from anything.

Let's try it here. Their site shouldn't distinguish between me or anyone else. My "home page" is still a Freep page. (Looks good in preview. Don't let that double .jpg extension fool you).
