How to explain California Weather???!!!

Usually we do not have extemely cold weather for very long. This past winter was an exception. We had several nights where the temps dropped to 24 - 25 degrees and stayed there for 8 - 9 hours. I'm sure we lost one orange tree and we do not know yet whether the avocados made it.

Unless it is foggy, the days usually warm up to mid 40's. When it is foggy, you can feel the cold, damp weather all the way to your bones. :)

Then winter is over before you know it. By the middle of February, we start to see signs of spring. It was in the 80s today. It is too early for it to stay that warm, but by July, it is not unusual for it to get into triple digits. Year before last when we had our picnic in July, the temps were about 110 on Friday night but cooled off to 107 for Saturday.

Then either the end of September or the middle of October, autumn arrives. LOL

Does it sound weird? Maybe, I just think it is weird when I hear of others having snow in March. :) I do not own a coat; I have a heavy jacket but I have not owned a coat for several years.

I took the picture March 2nd. We stopped at a neighbor's orchard so I could take pictures.

We have two almond trees but they are only a couple of years old and are not as pretty as the mature trees are.

I have been trying to carry my camera so I can practice. That is the good thing about the digital cameras. I can take all the pictures I want and if they are no good, just delete them. No one need know! LOL

Nice work! I have a digital camera that's small enough to carry in my purse -- my old one was too big to carry every day and that's how I missed getting what would likely have been some jarring shots on 9/11. I actually had it with me the night before, but left it at home the next morning...

I'm something of a shutterbug too and do a lot of work in Photoshop. If you need any help with touching up photos, just let me know.

I try to work with Paintshop Pro but I'm not very good. It has lots of features that I have not used.

About the only thing I do is crop and resize. I can add a border and text. That's about it. LOL

It's a shame you didn't have your camera on 9-11. How far away were you. Watching it on TV was unreal. I think I was is shock for a few days. Being there to see it is something that I cannot imagine.

PS: If you have any photos to share, we would love to see them.

ValerieUSA shares some of her pictures once in awhile.

I was maybe 4 very short blocks to the east of the WTC when it was hit. It was unreal and I still sometimes have a hard time believing it really happened. I live 5 blocks or so from there, and it just never feels the same. Anyway, I'm going to attempt to get some sleep...or else get dressed again and take a walk. Thanks for the distractions and cheering up. Have a good night!

When Tulips Bloom

I
WHEN tulips bloom in Union Aquare,
And timid breaths of vernal air
Go wandering down the dusty town,
Like children lost in Vanity Fair;

When every long, unlovely row
Of westward houses stands aglow,
And leads the eyes to sunset skies
Beyond the hills where green trees grow;

Then wearly seems the street parade,
And weary books, and weary trade:
I'm only wishing to go a-fishing;
For this the month of May was made.

II
I guess the pussy-willows now
Are creeping out on every bough
Along the brook; and robins look
For early worms behind the plough.

The thistle-birds have changed their dun,
For yellow coats, to match the sun;
And in the same array of flame
The Dandelion Show's begun.

The flocks of young anemones
Are dancing round the budding trees:
Who can help wishing to go a-fishing
In days as full of joy as these?

III
I think the meadow-lark's clear sound
Leaks upward slowly from the ground,
While on the wing the bluebirds ring
Their wedding-bells to woods around.

The flirting chewink calls his dear
Behind the bush; and very near,
Where water flows, where green grass grows,
Song-sparrows gently sing, "Good cheer."

And, best of all, through twilight's calm
The hermit-thrush repeats his psalm.
How mush I'm wishing to go a-fishing
In days so sweet with music's balm!

IV
'Tis not a proud desire of mine;
I ask for nothing superfine;
No heavy weight, no salmon great,
To break the record, or my line.

Only an idle little stream,
Whose amber waters softly gleam,
Where I may wade, through woodland shade,
And cast the fly, and loaf, and dream:

Only a trout or two, to dart
From foaming pools, and try my art:
'Tis all I'm wishing--old-fashioned fishing,
And just a day on Nature's heart.

Henry Van Dyke

The Tulip Bed

The May sun--whom
all things imitate--
that glues small leaves to
the wooden trees
shone from the sky
through bluegauze clouds
upon the ground.
Under the leafy trees
where the suburban streets
lay crossed,
with houses on each corner,
tangled shadows had begun
to join
the roadway and the lawns.
With excellent precision
the tulip bed
inside the iron fence
upreared its gaudy
yellow, white and red,
rimmed round with grass,
reposedly.

Good Job

I look at all that they have done,
They sure have done it fast.
They’ve started the rebuilding,
And Saddam’s time has past.
The people cheer our soldiers,
And wave as they go by.
The quagmire’s in John Kerry’s mind,
Another lib’ral lie.
No they’re not done but they’ll prevail,
The terrorists will flee.
They owe it to our fighting force,
Iraq will soon be free.

Merry March

Merry, mad March comes in with a bound,
Tossing our caps and our kites all around,
Whisking the cobwebs out of the sky,
Teasing wee birdies just learning to fly,
Giving each tree-child a vigorous shake,
Telling each bud it is time to awake,
Jerking leaf-coverlets off sleepy heads,
Routing young flowerlets from earthy beds,
Then with a song that makes work only play,
Merry, mad March goes dancing away.

>> Hope you had a great St.Patrick's Day, lousy Parade or not! :)

Sure did. The parade was great, it was the weather that was lousy. In our neighborhood, very few people stayed out to watch. It was poignant to see, say, high school band kids march by in their much practiced steps and fancy uniforms. Often they'd have a company of flag-twirling girls in front, and always the drum section bringing up the rear. Along with marching bands there were no end of Irish-American groups and color guards and bagpiper bands in elegant kilted uniforms skirling the service marches. They all deserved a warm ovation. But all they got was empty sidewalks.
