Drunken Hong Kong lawyer suspended from duty

Tue Aug 10, 7:02 AM ET

HONG KONG (AFP) - Hong Kong justice chiefs have suspended a lawyer who admitted being "drunk as a monkey" after his giggling and mumbling caused the adjournment of a court case, an official statement said Tuesday.

Roderick Murray clapped, put on his sunglasses, drummed his fingers on his desk and laughed during the District Court case of seven defendants charged over millions of dollars in unpaid cigarette duty.

The British-born prosecuting counsel was repeatedly reprimanded by Judge Chua Fi-lan, who later described his behaviour as "bizarre".

With news of his antics spread over the front pages of newspapers here, the city's Department of Justice (news - web sites) said it had decided to suspended him.

"Mr Murray has been suspended from out fiat lists pending an investigation," a statement said, adding that it had called on Murray to explain himself.

The city's leading prosecution lawyer, Grenville Cross, apologised to Judge Chua for the incident, it said.

Chua was forced to halt the case for 10 minutes while a court officer spoke to Murray.

Murray, who arrived at the morning hearing 40 minutes late and "smelled strongly of alcohol" at the afternoon session, according to the South China Morning Post, taunted legal chiefs in the Chinese territory to take action.

"You have to hear a lot of bullshit in court," he told the Post after the hearing, adding that he had downed "two dry martinis and a couple of beers" during a long lunch at a posh hotel bar.

"I think I should be reported to the Bar Association. But nobody is going strike me off."

The Department of Justice statement, however, said it had referred the case to the Bar Association.

The defendants were jailed for terms of between six weeks and two years and 10 months, the newspaper said.

I've been drunk as a monkey before. I started making weird noises, scratching myself, and flinging poo at passersby... Yeah, drunk as a monkey. Fun times... Fun times...

Drunken Driver Pulls Cop Over, Asks To Be Arrested

POSTED: 9:39 am EDT August 10, 2004

VERNON, Vt. -- It was the cop who was pulled over -- by a drunken driver, no less.

Vernon Police Chief Ian McCollin said he slowed down to take a look at a man edging toward a stop sign. McCollin said the man rolled down his window and made an astonishing request. The man said he was looking for a police officer to have himself arrested because he was drunk.

McCollin radioed for backup due to the unusual nature of the traffic stop.

The driver, identifying himself as Bryan Condo, said he was also driving on a suspended license. McCollin said Condo blew four times the legal limit on an alcohol breath test. He said Condo was a perfect gentleman as he was arrested for second-offense DUI and driving with a suspended license.

McCollin added that getting pulled over by a drunk is one for the books.
