As the leaders opened a summit here, a French medical official said Arafat was "brain dead" at a hospital outside Paris and breathing only through artificial life support... French President Jacques Chirac, who made a half-hour visit to the Percy Military Training Hospital where Arafat is being treated before coming to Brussels, refused to answer journalists' questions at the summit. But Chirac did brief Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker on the situation, forcing Juncker to retract a comment that Arafat had already died, aides said... Doubts over the peace plan have intensified with the Bush administration going cold on the initiative and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon pressing ahead with unilateral plans to withdraw from the Gaza Strip. The EU, however, reiterated its view that the Gaza plan could be a useful component of the roadmap, provided that Israel works with its partners to ensure the withdrawal does not leave a security and administrative vacuum.

Or, Sharon could withdraw from Gaza, build another Fence, and let the Arabs (the term "Palestinians" is a misnomer) in Gaza figure out what to go with themselves.

Despite Arafat, Iraq is still the key
Telegraph op-ed

Yesterday, three soldiers of the Black Watch, which has been redeployed to release a battalion of US Marines for the task, were killed. Britain has 8,100 troops in Iraq, responsible not only for ensuring security for a general election, but also that the Sunnis, Shia and Kurds do not tear the country apart thereafter. That is the key test of Western will in the Middle East and on its outcome will depend the influence Mr Bush and Mr Blair can bring to bear on the Israelis and Palestinians.
Garbage.

Imagine what a PLO state funeral will be like? Will they clothe the corpse in explosive belts and explode him into Allahville?

When Khomeini died, the crowd in its agony wound up desecrating the body. His funeral should be in Gaza, and so should his interment. That would make Gaza the location of "Palestine". Keep the carcasse out of the West Bank. The funeral will probably be the biggest thing in the Arab world since Nasser kicked off.

"The funeral will probably be the biggest thing in the Arab world since Nasser kicked off."

So, anyone still confused about why some call theirs a "culture of death"?
