I'm a big fat quitter. (Vanity to the Nth)

Posted on 02/09/2005 10:29:25 AM PST by socalrepubminority

Yesterday I quit smoking.
I figure if I can keep a little log on how the progress is going you guys can give advice, and words of encouragement, either that or you guys flame the hell out of me, I never post a vanity again and this thread falls into obscurity.
just some background to get a handle on the situation my wife and I BOTH smoke(d), we're 28 years old, no kids, both smoked for over 10 years, I'm on the gum she's on the patch.
Yesterday was a haze, all I remember is coming home from work diving into two day old pizza and chicken wings, toped off with a bowl of peanut butter cup ice cream. the wife came home, she's a Rat I'm a Republican....I know(we try to never talk politics), it's already set up to be a rumble in the jungle, I think we said four words to each other last night "I love you goodnight".
A couple of things as I move into day two.
1. Is this freaking gum supposed to burn my mouth so much that I can't tell if I'm drooling or not?
2. How long am I going to continue to want to punch people who have done nothing but talk to me?

1. In all seriousness, I'm not sure you're supposed to chew on it long enough for it to burn. I don't know though, you might want to check on that.

2. For a long time. hehe

I'm a smoker myself, so I can empathize with your situation. Good luck, I'll keep you in my prayers!

To be honest, I don't know. I've never tried to quit smoking, but I have that urge all the time...

Good luck. I've never had to deal with this, my parents both smoked when we were growing up, and none of the 7 children picked up the habit. (just lucky, I guess) My children finally guilted my parents into quitting, bringing up the fact that they would miss all their milestones if they kept on smoking.

You need to find something to do with your hands, along with the gum. Maybe sunflower seeds? Try not to just go to candy, that can pack on the pounds. Don't stress about the weight gain, you can lose the pounds, you don't want to lose your lungs!

I do not have any answers for your questions but I do want to wish you the very best of luck.

Just remember not to beat yourself up too much if you relapse. Everyone has things they struggle with.

Good Luck

Good luck...I have been trying as well, but keep failing as I get too frustrated. Hubby quit years ago and is still a grouch. He knows better than to punch me, I hit back : )

I hope you get flamed good. When I quit I got downright hateful for about 4 days. You need a good, butt blistering flame war to take it out on.

I've tried the seeds before, I chewed so many that I got salt sores or something inside my mouth. maybe I should've gone to unslated but those taste terrible. Now I've gone to sugarfree orbit regular gum when the nicorette isn't shoved up into my mouth.

You can do it. I quit chewing ( pack a day ) last year when my 8 year old ask me to quit so I wouldn't lose my jaw like the man in nursing home. I quit that day and have not had a problem.

I have noticed I don't get headaches as often and my teeth are whiter and better breath.

Stay with it. Everyday is one more away from it.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

Suggestions:

1) Try the patch.

2) Buy a punching bag and get it out of your system.

I can't do the patch, I'm to mentally addicted to the action. I end up eating pens, pencils, paper....whatever I can get my hands on.

Congrats! I quit almost a year ago. Start exercising it'll help you take your mind off of things and experience the rewards of quiting sooner.

I surf, but I have to get up at 5 AM to do it before work. I must get back into that or I fear for those who I love. The pent up aggression has been unbearable the last couple of days....my co-workers hate me at this point.

"I love you goodnight" is a lot better than "Burn in hell forever"

Hint: If you fail. Don't beat yourself up.

Dust yourself off, look at that caused you to fall off the wagon and try not to fall into that trap again.

Everyday is a new day to win

I agree. Hey, Congrats!

I'm sure you'll be successful.

No flames here.

Remember it's a change of lifestyle. No excuses, work hard at it... etc.

Just a note, David & Sons has come out with a low(er) salt version of seeds, if that helps. I've heard the oral fixation problem is a big one to overcome. There are some inhalers that some people use to help with this.

Since Saturday, I've cut down to 6 cigarettes a day. The only time I successfully quit was by cutting down so much that I just got bored with it and forgot to smoke.

I tried the patch a couple of years ago. It didn't help my cravings at all and I was constantly crying.

Instead of saying, "no more for me, I quit!" I'm saying "no more smoking in the house" or "no more smoking in the car." Within 2 weeks, I'll only allow myself to smoke in the doghouse...and then, I'll just put down the cigs for good.
