The Dragon Flies' Lair~Thread XXI~
June 26, 2005 | bentfeather/Poets of the Lair

My Dragon Fly and Me

If I could be a Dragon Fly
and wing my way through the sky
I would never be shy
just me and my Dragon Fly!

By moonlight we ride the wind
chase the comets tail for fun
by day we would hide from the sun
our fragile wings would come undone

On darkest nights we would use
fireflies as our guide
we would dip and we would glide
through the heavens open wide
and scatter diamonds in the night sky
my Dragon Fly and me...

And we would wing past our lovers
silent in the night...
to kiss their face in our flight
much to their surprise and delight
my Dragon Fly and me in sight...

Such a view do we share
away up here in the air
of breezes soft through our hair
my Dragon Fly and me a pair...

Why I Love My Country

I love her magnificent majesty
Her colors: RED, WHITE and BLUE
from her mighty mountain peaks
to her delta lows
the way her mighty rivers flow
Her frozen land of glaciers
to her deserts barren and cold
I love my mighty country.

Upon whose rocky roads I've run
I love her Pride and Pomp
I love her patience not to tromp
I love her freedom, she lets me be me
with responsibility
and the SISU to pay the dues

To take care of me at all times, but
should I need a hand,
she is grand and lends a hand up
-not a hand out

She said, I could have an education
that I would have to work for it
no one would hand me my grades
It's a prudent decision she has made...

I love her, because I can run
through the roses at three am
and dream of faraway lands
Be happy in my skin
Oh, yes, I love my homeland
She is Grand!!!!

The 4th of July, like Memorial day is often a somber day to me. I reflect upon the cost, and price yet to pay for the freedoms some would just toss away. The poem below is an encapsulation of my feelings, and fears of what we seemingly allow today. Do we all really care, or understand the things we once valued?

Trike, (an old Vet with too much time to think)

Fourth of Freedom

Oh so bright,
the fire-born colors,
arching across the dark sky.

Colorful,
those reminders of deadly shells,
and the patriots who’d fight and die.

They, at least,
thought America was good,
worthy of their final sacrifice.

But, anti-American,
bitterness taught from within,
says such sacrifice should go on ice.

The Me’s,
wanting only their share of all,
afraid of freedom’s cost and care.

Demeaning America,
for they fear responsibility,
and all the duties of the soul kept there.

Demeaning God,
for He too teaches duty and faith,
and final judgment for eternity’s span.

Demeaning the Flag,
and all it means to freemen,
and those wanting to be free from those who ran.

Watch the fireworks,
but remember the fight goes on,
not just across the sea, but with the ‘anti’ next door.

Love America,
build America and pass it on,
its time we all need to give so much more!

Thank You for this poem. I was in the backyard this afternoon for a while and wrote a piece in my head. Here is a little of it.

I am mad at those who think
this land of ours is a dirty sink

They toss their verbal trash around
like cash and have not thought about
who kept that right for them to act

like thankless gimme's in the grass
of course they have that right, it's protected
in this land...

I flew my flag yesterday 'twas one
of two on my street... the folks
walked by a stared at it as though
it was something new

They believe it's okay to steal
a Support the Troops magnet ribbon
from my mailbox... and the Green wienie
next door thinks it's okay to splice
my tv cable and buy me off for $50.00 bucks
stuck in an envelope and dropped in my box
with an unsigned letter of explanation

I returned his money, I'm not to be bought
my mom taught me honesty with a switch
and a pot....

They care about freedom as long as it's theirs
they don't care who paid the cost whose blood
soaks the dirt, who lost and arm and a leg,
or maybe a eye, or is covered with burns
or who slept on the sand, or who froze
with General Washington all those years ago.

Hell no, they don't care and further more they
don't know.
