Dog Flu Spreads Worry Nationwide
ABC News ^ | 9/27/05

A newly discovered virus has killed dogs in at least seven states, and veterinarians, kennel operators and pet owners are concerned because researchers say there is no vaccine and dogs do not have immunity to the new flu.

Dr. Cynda Crawford, an immunologist at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, said in an audio interview posted on the university Web site that the disease is only deadly in rare cases — about 10 percent in puppies and old dogs — but is of concern because it is spreading rapidly.

Unsure if this topic has come up on FR (cannot find anything), so if not, I thought FR pet lovers would be interested to know about this.

Interesting that in the first recent bird flu outbreak in Turkey...the government culled the birds and also ordered that all village dogs be shot. What is it that the CDC is not telling us?

I think another article was posted recently, but it's good to have it posted for all of us with dogs. Why did the author mention the seven states it has been found in, then neglect to mention which states those are? I don't remember them from the previous article.

We have had it come up before, and I've Doggipinged it... but it's apparently going to be a topic we discuss more than once.

George Bush doesn't care about dogs or dog owners! (grin)

I keep my dog on a tether in the park because that's the law. But it's hard to keep him from getting his mouth or paws on areas where other dogs have relieved themselves. :(

Btw, I always put a bandana with American flags on him. :)

Well, the good news is, it's not a deadly flu for most healthy dogs that get it... It's just a flu, and like us, most just feel real lousy for awhile then recover.

Thanks. FR is not great for lots of things, frankly, including searching old stuff. I tried "dog flu", "canine flu", flu, etc, before giving up. Didn't perfectly match key words, obviously.

Do not use/repeat MSM on 'professional grade' news. This is merely MSM hyperbolic hysteria. Try this for Monitoring Emerging Diseases - Pro-MED, with no mention of a 'new' doggy flu. http://www.promedmail.org/pls/promed/f?p=2400:1000

There was a thread in the last couple of weeks saying it mainly involved racing Greyhounds. That's about all I remember.

Well my spoiled little critter occasionally goes to doggy day care (and loves it). I called my vet last Friday to ask if there were any cases in our state yet, if so day care is gonna have to be a thing of the past.

the answer from the vet was that so far in WA state no cases they were aware of...closest state they knew to have the problem was AZ.
