Bird Nearly Ruins Dominoes Record Attempt

Mon Nov 14, 5:01 PM ET

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A sparrow knocked over 23,000 dominoes in the Netherlands, nearly ruining a world record attempt before it was shot to death Monday, the state news agency reported.

The unfortunate bird flew through an open window at an exposition center in the northern city of Leeuwarden where employees of television company Endemol NV have worked for weeks setting up more than 4 million dominoes in an attempt to break the official Guinness World Record for falling dominoes on Friday night.

Only a system of 750 built-in gaps in the chain prevented the bird from knocking most or all of the dominoes over ahead of schedule, "Domino Day" organizers were quoted as saying by the NOS news agency.

The bird was shot by an exterminator with an air rifle while cowering in a corner.

The organizers are out to break their own record of 3,992,397 dominoes set last year with a new record of 4,321,000.

Some people take their domino toppling very seriously.

Was the bird cowering in the corner, or was the exterminator?

None of the above! It was the gun that was cowering!

"Some people take their domino toppling very seriously."

Dr. Sigmund Blur will explain this to you:

The sparrow was symbolic of the disenfranchised anarchists, the working class, rising up against the Have-Dominoes.

The elites in the building, the only ones in the story able to carry guns, defended the Bourgeoise status quo and violently put down the Worker's Revolution.

But the sparrows will storm the castle again.

Until then, though, "LET THEM EAT MILLET"

I just can't picture any domino setup that's worth a life. Even a sparrow's...

We can recreate a domino setup but recreating the bird is way beyond our capabilities.

[Though a good taxidermist could fake it.]

I wonder though- if these dingbats planned to bring a air rifle to a domino event in the first place, why didn't they think ahead and just shut the window?

Lesson learned. When playing with dominoes, always hire an exterminator to be in attendance.

I would pay good money to see a sparrow cowering in the corner. Did he put his wings up over his eyes or what?

I would think a sparrow toppling 23,000 dominoes is a Guinness book record as well...

Were these folks just selfish that they didn't want to share the credit?

I tried to think of something more boring to do than fool around with dominobricks... Couldn't think of anything...

If they assembled the dominoes without security-bricks, but with birdies, ferrets and squirrels locked inside the building however; now that would be an extreme sport worth watching! If the dutch girls also wore thight tank-tops I would even consider to participate...

I don't know if the Dutch (or even Dutch media company Endemol NV) are helping out in the War on Terror, but if they're not, an event like this should give them something to reflect on.

Genocidal tyrant = untouchable
Domino-pushing sparrow = KILL!
