Falcons' QB Vick defends his troubled brother(rules apply to others only)

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick believes Virginia Tech overreacted when the school dismissed his brother, Marcus, from the football team after he stomped on an opposing player during the Gator Bowl.

Marcus Vick later claimed the incident was accidental and that he apologized to Louisville's Elvis Dumervil, but the All-American defensive end denied receiving an apology.

Michael Vick, who led Virginia Tech to the 1999 national title game as a redshirt freshman, was at the Gator Bowl and saw his brother step on Dumervil.

"Sometimes your emotions just take over," Michael Vick said during halftime Wednesday night of the Atlanta Hawks' game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. "I know Marcus. He's not the kind of kid that's going to do something like that on purpose. That's just something he's got to live with, and now it's just time to move on."

Marcus Vick's Gator Bowl antics came after he received a speeding ticket on Dec. 17 in Hampton, Va., for driving with a suspended license.

He had been under a "zero tolerance" policy at Virginia Tech following his suspension from the university for the 2004 season after several legal problems.

Earlier this month, just three days after being kicked off the football team, Vick was arrested and charged with pulling a gun on three teenagers in Virginia.

Suspended by Coach Frank Beamer for undisclosed reason

He went to an Atlanta Falcons football game after being told not to do it.

The girl retracted the sex story so it was dropped.

Mike intervened with Beamer to get Marcus another chance. Beamer responded with a list of conditions. Immediately, rumors began that Marcus was transferring to Georgia Southern because of the severity of the conditions. Amazingly, Marcus met the list of conditions and Beamer was honor bound to give him another chance.

In hindsight, many think Marcus should have been booted for life but it would have been difficult to kick someone off for the infractions listed. Regular students don't get the same penalty.

A certain Vince Young is about to make the Vick's look like amateurs on the field.

Probably not. Young will fall into the same trap.

The NFL game is built around the 6'-5" pocket passer with just enough escape ability to survive and leadership skills on par with MacArthur. Plenty of teams have tried to change the QB to a scrambler / college type - almost always with a distinct lack of playoff success.

QB's with the running ability of the Vicks and Young are only marginally faster than NFL defenders - even some linemen. They tend to expose such QB's as one-dimensional.

Convicted of three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $2,250

and you don't get convicted on a dropped story

Four of the nine items you list in your case that Marcus was "catered to" were stiff punishments meted out to Marcus by Virginia Tech.

Other students aren't getting a paid for education either. It took me 5 years to pay of my loans.

They need to be held to a jigher standard if they want my money.

Marcus didn't need the money. Mike gave more than Marcus's tuition to VT.

By the way, Vince Young happens to be 6'5" and is on par with MacArthur in leadership skills. He's as mobile as any current NFL starting QB today, and then some. Then again, you probably thought 'SC was gonna pummel the Horns in the Rose Bowl. And you really think VY is going to turn into a punk like Marcus Vick?

We'll see. Young is an excellent college athlete, but he is an average pro. UT built their offense on the back of his threat to run out of the pocket so the opposing secondary had to play soft and be able to react.

He will not "run" out of the pocket in the pros when the other DE and LB's are as fast or faster and heavier than he is. Plus he has never had to read a good defense, he drops back and sees a rush the runs wherever his feet are pointing. He'd better start trying to polish his pass timing.

If they were smart they'd make him a WR and allow him to be one on one with a shorter defender and use his speed there.

That does not matter. If older brother gave money to VT it should be in the general fund and not earmarked for his brother. Other alums can't point to a student and say I want him/her to get "my" money.

If Vick wants to support his brother have him drop his scholarship and financially support him totally. It is not like he can't afford it.

Well, I don't know if there are any better defenses in college football than Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, USC, and Penn St. He beat 3 of those in the past 2 years. He's just so fast, as fast as Mike Vick ever was. That plus his size make him a big threat for NFL defenses, IMO. Granted, it's a much bigger game in the pros...I'm just more optimistic I guess.

No college team can beat a pro team. The intensity level is just to far off ( and that comes from retired NFL players and college players who are not conceited and will admit that once they move up ).

He no doubt will be a franchise player as long as he listens to his offensive coordinator and only runs when he really, really has too. That will allow his career to be long.

I agree with that. He's not going to be an immediate impact player, but once he's learned enough of the playbook to take the field, he should impress quite a few folks with his raw athleticism. He's come a long way in the 3 years he played at Texas.
