ATLANTA -- Comedy Central's "South Park" won its first Peabody Award on Wednesday, winning praise from judges as TV's boldest, most politically incorrect satirical series.
"South Park" was praised as a show that "pushes all the buttons, turns up the heat and shatters every taboo," Peabody Awards Director Horace Newcomb said. "Through that process of offending it reminds us of the need for being tolerant."

From the article (I learned something, too): The George Foster Peabody Awards, for broadcasting excellence in both news and entertainment, are given annually by the University of Georgia. Thirty-two awards will be handed out June 5 in New York, hosted by two-time recipient Jon Stewart, who anchors Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."
The George Foster Peabody Awards, more commonly known as simply the "Peabody Awards", are annual international awards given for excellence in radio and television broadcasting and cable television. Founded in 1940, the awards are administered by the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. The awards are named after the capitalist George Foster Peabody who donated the funds to initiate the awards.
The Peabody Awards are generally regarded as the most prestigious awards within the fields of broadcast journalism, documentary making, educational programming, children's programming, and entertainment.
The Peabody Awards were originally only for radio, but in 1948 television awards were introduced. In the late 1990s additional categories for material distributed via the World Wide Web were added. Materials created for theatrical motion picture release are not eligible.
