July 28, 2006 -- New moms should breastfeed exclusively for six months to help protect their babies against developing food allergiesallergies later on, one of the nation's leading allergy and asthmaasthma groups says.
Solid foods of all types should be avoided for the first six months, and certain items -- like cow's milk, eggs, fish, and nuts -- should not be introduced until even later, according to a consensus statement on infant feeding released this week by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
"It is important to understand that we are talking about exclusive breastfeedingbreastfeeding, with no formula, soy or anything else," researcher Amal Assa'ad, MD, tells WebMD. "This appears to be important for protecting against allergies."

I was jamming tuna, eggs, and roast beef sandwiches down the throat of my kid and he was born 2 1/2 months premature.
He's in the Marines today. So, I'm a little bit skeptical about how valid this article is.
Let's play, "What's my agenda"! And did the check clear this month?
Very interesting. My nephew has lots of allergies at 3 and I wonder if they maybe could've been prevented... We'll never know!!
marked for later...
All the kids were eating some solid food by 3 months.
Mere formula would not do it, It just made them colicky and miserable and they were perpetually hungry.
Many walked before 10 months, too. The grandkids were the same way, (all 12!), and so is the great granddaughter.
Oh, no allergies, either.
health ping
So... what IS the agenda?
My husband and I both have food allergies and were raised on formula (me) or Pet Evaporated Milk mixed with water (him). I nursed my kids and NONE have food allergies. Besides, I just couldn't bring myself to feed my kids something that has the stench of formula. GAG!
Healthy children?
I suppose watching children suffering with food allergies and asthma come through my office on a daily basis would do that to one.
My son didn't want anything to do with food until he could put it in his mouth himself, at about 9 months. He was growing well and I never told the doctor he wasn't on solids. He thought he was and said he was doing well.
By the time the third one came around, I just didn't have time to waste feeding her so I nursed her as long as I could, about 9 months for her.
You know, when they're learning to eat, they about need a bath after every mealtime.
My oldest is the only one who has any allergies to something she eats and the is red food coloring. The very first time she had hives from something she ate, was when she was on the pink amoxcillin. At the time I thought it was the antibiotic. We've come to find out now that she's severely allergic to carmine (a *natural* red color made from insects) and Red Lake 7 (the dye in Benadryl- we have to give her the dye free stuff). She developed the allergy at about 9 months.
Mother had uremic poisoning with me. Couldn't breast feed, as I recall her saying.
I've had tons of allergies but not sure how many food allergies . . . seems like maybe to red grapes, in my later years. Didn't seem to digest cows milk all that well but not a full blown thing, seemingly. Don't seem to handle scallops, egg plant . . . something else . . . forget . . . very well.
BTW, howdy, dear heart.
I guess i don't have to ping you!
My Mammary Senses were tingling.
