Dear [snip]: I need your help to let the Jacksboro area squirrel hunters know Mepps still buys squirrel tails. Every year it gets tougher to get the tails we need to dress our spinners, but we know from experience a little ink or air time is always a big help. Details are below. Any assistance you can offer, Etta would be sincerely appreciated. Should you need additional information please contact me.
Respectfully, [snip] ----------------------- [snip] ------------------
Here's the release...
Recycle Your Squirrel Tails
Mepps, manufacturer of the World's #1 Lure, the Mepps spinner, is asking Jacksboro area hunters to save their squirrel tails. The tails are used to dress the hooks of Mepps, the original French spinner. Mepps has been buying fox, black, and grey squirrel tails for more than three decades, and will pay up to 26 cents each for tails, depending on quality and quantity. The cash value is doubled if the tails are traded for Mepps lures. "Hundreds of other materials, both natural and synthetic, have been tested," says Jim Martinsen, Mepps spokesman, "but few materials work as well. Mepps is only interested in recycling tails taken from squirrels that have been harvested for the table," Martinsen stresses. "We do not advocate taking squirrels strictly for their tails." Details on the Mepps squirrel tail recycling program can be found at: http://www.mepps.com/squirrels Interested hunters can also call: 800-713-3474. Mepps, 626 Center St., Antigo, WI 54409-2496.
Please note: It is illegal to sell squirrel tails in CA, ID, OR, & TX -30-
FIL would be happy to get this piece of mail :(
Oh it'll get cast into the chat boneyard. My FIL found a squirrel nest in his car today. He seemed genuinely surprised that I didn't want him to shoot the squirrel :D
Can someone PLEASE get this thread off here. How do you delete this stuff?

BuMp. They want the tail bone left in. It's easier for them to get the hair off nicely.
Gee, wish we had known this several years ago.... we have been blowing the hell out of them with a shotgun! All we have left is a pink mist. That cures the anger we have from the squirrels eating our house.
do they want em pickled?
Why do you want it deleted now? You got us all worked up and now that were after some tail, you want to spoil the fun. You going squirrlly on us? :)
No, just bone in, dry and straight. Packed so the hair stays nice.
Definitely want the shotgun for that one!
LOLOLOL
ROTFLMAO
They tried to chew right through the walls, but keep ending up on the breakfast table.

I hate it when they just watch you, you know they were up to no good.
i wuz cleaning out a relatives tackle box and she let me use her computor and i think im in some deep shit now help me this crap deleted!!!!!
As a matter of fact, being a big Mepps fan, I am disappointed to see this in chat. I think it deserves should be in breaking news under squirrel nuts;)
I'm not sure I could get my mouth to open for one. They have played havoc with the house though. Darn near chewed through 8" logs!

I gave up fishing a few years back (not sure why, no real reason) but nothing ever worked as good as a Mepps spinner. The action is second to none and they'll spin better than any other even with a very slow retrieve.
I have a tiny Mepps #0 1/8 oz spinner that's caught dozens of sunfish, bluegills, crappies and even a 3 lb largemouth bass. It's been snagged a bunch of times, but I always got it back and never broke the hook. Most of the paint is gone (used to be red with tiny yellow polka-dots), with a black spinner blade.
It's one of my most prized possessions.
Finish it in a 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes and remove the pieces of squirrel from the pan and set aside.
Put the pan back over medium heat, and add a couple of cloves of sliced garlic, some finely chopped onions or shallots, and cook until tender. Then deglaze the pan with some red wine. Be sure to scrape all those little brown bits off the bottom of the pan with a whisk.
Reduce the sauce by half over medium heat. Then add a pat or two of butter, a bit of heavy cream, and season to taste with salt and pepper.
Pour the sauce over your still warm and crunchy squirrel and serve immediately.
Yummy.

You can just log off there. All that's left is FR in the history list.
check out that pic *LOL* good grief!
That takes me back, Woody. The smaller Mepps caught not only the sunfish, specks, and bluegills, but, like you wrote, large mouth as well. Once in a while, went all out and had the one with the plastic minnow, but that was not as good. Canadian AF used to include Mepps in survival gear. Don't know if they still do.
Check out the JD squirrel!
They're very tasty. Just boil for ~45 min, then fry in butter. I used to marinate them in maple syrup sol'n for about a week, or more then fry them up in the dorm. Folks came from all over to get some of my little chickens. I would never disclose where I got them. They went to every store in town to quiz about getting some. At the end of the season when they were scarfing the last batch down I told them. Man they all turned green! Some couldn't take it, so they left. The rest went normal, said, "they're great" and returned to scarfing them down. :)
Oh, I see. Ya posted the wrong @. LOL! Just act surprised and say ya can't imagine why UPS is delivering all those pkgs. :)
LOL
You misapprehend what some people will do for a piece of.....( oh never mind!)
Ha, Only in ALabama.
I have a 12 year old girl visiting and last night I wanted to kill her. She has had me on the myspace, then on some kid movie star's web site, showing me what she does on the net.
So I made the mistake of showing her what I do, on FR. She was so impressed she posted this thread.
However, I gave her her first fly casting lesson today, and this kid is a natural. I am SO impressed (and want to encourage her so I'll have a fishing partner, fishing alone is not good) that I'll forgive her, till I have truckloads of UPS vans delivering squirrel tails to my door (groan).
Okay, I'm probably going to alienate all of my bird thread FRiends,
but how about tails harvested 'cause the little boogers wouldn't stay off my bird-feeders and out of the attic?
LOL!
You have a very evil sense of humor!
(I like it :-)
Lurker that recipe sounds awesome -- I will try it now that I'm going to be blasting my overpopulated squirrels away, and getting some Mepps spinners for my efforts.
Seriously.
I just bought a fly tying kit and I think I'll harvest some squirrels for the table, send Mepps the tails and use some of the hair for flies.
I LOVE Mepps spinners, use them a lot. They catch trout, panfish, bass, any fish will hit them. The most versatil (sp) bait ever made.
Glad you liked the recipe. It's one of my favorite ways to prepare squirrel. If you've a mind, try browning them in some left over bacon grease. That's what my grandmother did.
Not good for the heart but man oh man is it tasty. Pork Fat Rules!
Good luck with the flies. I never got the hang of fly fishing.
L
LOL.
I didn't post this, a 12 year old relative staying with me for a few days did. She's here fishing with me this week. I think I'll be monitoring the rest of her activity on the computer.
Her parents let her play on the computer, so I let her while I cooked. I had showed her my favorite site and how I can post replies to people.
I really want to help Mepps out. I hope all who reads this will ping any squirrel hunting/fishing friends on this. In fact, I think from now on when I see any freshly squished squirrels on the road I'll stop and get the tails and send them to Mepps.
Read post #42. It had my address and all on it. Been a crazy week here.
I'm going to call Bill Horn for you next week. I ended up having a kid come stay with me for a few days and she wants 24/7 attention, so I'm not gettin much else done till she leaves Monday.
We're going fishing tomorrow. I gave her first fly casting lesson today and she's made for it. I gave her a ton of fishing tackle and last week my sister's grandson was here and cleaned out several tackle boxes.
Jeesh, I'm going to keep on till I'm out of tackle.
Ditto to that. Plus I have good memories with Mepps of fishing days gone past;)
"LOL, I'll FReepmail you my address if you're feeling 'charitable'!"
Too late Yank, I am now (instead of penniless) almost tackless.
It's okay though, I am just happy to introduce these kids to fishing. We just returned from camping on the lake, the little girl and I. I sure picked a good time to go camping, the weather is in the 90s (with no breeze whatsoever). Not real conducive to an adult, 12 year old, and 60 pound English setter sleeping in a pup tent. I am beat, and even the fish were too smart to participate.
I took both spin cast and fly fishing tackle. She has taken a liking to fly fishing, and her casts could put some heavies to shame. I can envision the future female version of Lefty Kreh, taking pity on a poor old woman who can't drive her self fishing anymore -- remembering that when she needed a ride I was there ;)
