Incredibly LOW Voter Turnout Today In South Florida (Bad News For Katherine Harris?)
Self | September 5, 2006 | PJ-Comix

Posted on 09/05/2006 2:06:36 PM PDT by PJ-Comix

I voted less than an hour ago. When I entered my polling station, I was the ONLY voter in there. On my way out I remarked that the turnout seemed light and guessed only a hundred folks had voted there up until then. The poll worker then told me I was number 14 voting today. I thought she was kidding but she assured me she was not. Since I figure my precinct must have at least a couple of thousand registered voters, I figure there will be only a about a 2 percent turnout.

One reason for the low turnout is that today follows Labor Day, not exactly a great day to schedule an election. Also it has been raining a lot all day. On top of that the Palmetto Freeway has been closed down Northbound in northern Dade County due to a gasoline spill from a truck.

So how does that bode for the prospects of Katherine Harris? Not good. The main reason that I voted today was to cast a ballot for Leroy Collins. Why? Well, just as the tail end of the Collins radio commercials have been saying: "SHE CAN'T WIN!!!"

If Collins wins the primary, whoever produced that radio commercial should win an award for creativity. I first heard the Collins radio commercial last week. The first part of it is like any other forgettable political commercial which lists the attributes of the candidate. I can't even tell you what was said. However, it was the woman yelling loudly at the end that got my attention: "SHE CAN'T WIN!!!" Not only did it make me laugh but I actually looked forward to hearing it again.

So why did I cast my ballot for Collins instead of McBride? The biggest reason is that McBride was MIA. I have heard zip from him. Hey, if he was serious about running then he should have made some sort of EFFORT. Therefore I went with Collins because he made an effort with that BRILLIANT radio commercial. Hopefully, if he wins, that creativity will be used in the campaign against Bill Nelson.

Motivation will count for a lot today in who votes and IMHO, ensuring that a WINNABLE Senatorial candidate is nominated will be a motive for those battling the lousy weather and heavy traffic today.

Okay, you Katherine Harris bitter enders may now begin your posts telling me how shallow I am for basing my vote on a funny radio commercial.

I'm not a bitter ender, but it's just interesting to see the power of broadcast time--if someone hears someone's ad, whatever the content, they get a vote. Which is why whichever party spends the most wins.

You have to factor in the absentee voters which have yet to be accounted for.

Well, I don't think that Harris can win in the general election. So then the choice came down between McBride and Collins. Since I have seen and heard zip from McBride it tells me he isn't making the effort to win. OTOH, Collins BRILLIANT radio commercial tells me he IS making the effort. Oh, and it is refreshing to actually hear an interesting radio commercial. Well, actually the Collins commercial sounds like your standard political commercial except for the tail end where some loud woman yells: "SHE CAN'T WIN!!!"

I don't even recall getting an absentee ballot in the mail. What's up with that?

I would have voter for her just for this pic and a "R" by her name.

How shallow is that? :)

I've never gotten an absentee ballot in the mail either, that's probably because I didn't request one.

I'll be requesting one this year though.

Don't underestimate effort. In high school we had a guy run for student body president. A completely meaningless job. Except it does teach kids a bit about politics. Okay, so this guy had lots of qualifications but he NEVER asked for our vote. He considered it demeaning. Meanwhile the "shallow" guy won because he actually asked for our vote even though it was for an utterly meaningless post. Oh, and the loser went into a deep depression. The guy couldn't figure out why he lost. DUhhhhh!!!

I dunno, all that tells me is he had the coin to spend. He dropped it at a commercial house which came up with a bunch of commercials, and his people picked one. I don't think that says a thing about him making the effort, or how he would act in office, and it doesn't seem a particularly good way to pick a candidate.

I'm glad you braved the rain and traffic to cast your vote today.

I once voted for a female judicial candidate because she rubbed my back and tummy outside of an early voting center. How shallow is that?

Collins SPENT money for the commercial. What did McBride do? As far as I can see, NADA. I have to go with a candidate who I can see will make an EFFORT in the general election.

It's amazing what a little female attention does to a man.

I'm not underestimating effort. But come on, do you really think he had anything to do with getting that ad on the air? I have a close friend who works for one of the potential 2008 prez candidates, and he works every day of the week, usually for up to 18 hours. The candidate knows he exists, but he certainly doesn't check his work.

We all have the right to our own basis for picking someone to vote for, but I don't see how this is any evidence of someone who'd be good in the job. One of his staff picked a production house, and then picked the ad. OK, you could say he's good at picking staffers but when we use that as a basis for a vote we're really getting far from the abilities one needs to work in congress.

I was a little sorry that a female judicial candidate from the last election named Schwarzenreich wasn't running this year. She was really hot. A tummie rub from her would have convinced me to cast my ballot in her direction. At the last election, all that showed up at the early voting center was her hubby. Bummer.

OK, so that's the level we're at now--someone deserves a vote because he can afford to buy commercial time? Did McBride have the money to spend?

I vote on the candidate's issues. I don't vote because one of his underlings spent money other people earned and donated.

Hey. For me it came down to a choice between Collins and McBride. I heard a funny commercial from Collins and NOTHING from McBride. I want a winner who demonstrates motivation. And that's how I made my decision. (BTW, I am wondering if the audio of the Collins commercial is on the Web. It's quite funny at the end.)

We had a massive downpour that ended 10 minutes before we left the house to join Katherine Harris to wave signs this afternoon. As soon as we got there, the clouds broke, and the blue skies and sunshine appeared. We had a great time, with overwhelming support from the passersby!
