Prayer Thread for the Election
Me | 11/2/06 | Knitting a Conundrum

Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people. A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor; but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days. Proverbs 28: 15, 16

With the election coming, I ask those of you who wish to to join me in prayer for the election.

Going crazy closing up a house here in Utah to move to Idaho. Ut;s been so very busy, with many trips back and forth. God keeps smooothing the way when I think this is a bad idea, so I persevere. Haven't had a lot of time for FR, but for this weekend, I will be here more than usual to pray God's will be done for the election, and that we open our hearts and let him guide us.

O Lord,
Please pierce the heart of those who would use you,
who would use the image of your love for us
as a political statement of their determination
to act in sin.

Pierce their hearts
with the reality of their wrongdoing,
Claiming that you are there to tell us our sins are ok,
and may they realize the enormity of the wrong they do
and return in penance.

O Lord,
help us,
We who love you,
And know that your word was not given lightly,
that the cost you were willing to pay for our salvation
was high,
and that leading our brothers and sisters astray
in the name of political correctness,
of justification for the sins you condemned
is a wrong that needs our eyes open to see.

Help us to be willing to stand up and say,
This is wrong,
the wisdom to know how to act,
and the joy of being your witness.

Lead us to help those this election day
to see through the veils of the enemy,
and guide those around us to the Truth you give,
and that doing the duty of good citizens,
we may know that in our voting,
we have done our part to be light and salt and leaven
in this dark world
for the glory of your name.

Amen.

Lord, into your hands do we commend our country during this time of election. Be with those who vote, be with those who work the polling stations, be with those who count the votes, certify the elections, and all who are involved with the process. Lord, we pray that in our choosing, we may reflect your choice and that our country be in your hands, now and forever, Amen.

Scripture contemplation:

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
who put darkness for light and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
and shrewd in their own sight!

Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine,
and valiant men in mixing strong drink,
who acquit the guilty for a bribe,
and deprive the innocent of his right!

Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble,
and as dry grass sinks down in the flame,
so their root will be as rottenness,
and their blossom go up like dust;
for they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts,
and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Isaiah 5:20-24

Lord, open the eyes of those who cling to such leaders, and guide their hands on election day to make the right choices.

For the wicked boasts of the desires of his heart,
and the man greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD.
In the pride of his countenance the wicked does not seek him;
all his thoughts are, "There is no God."

His ways prosper at all times;
thy judgments are on high, out of his sight;
as for all his foes, he puffs at them.
He thinks in his heart, "I shall not be moved;
throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity."
His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression;
under his tongue are mischief and iniquity.
He sits in ambush in the villages;
in hiding places he murders the innocent.
His eyes stealthily watch for the hapless,
he lurks in secret like a lion in his covert;
he lurks that he may seize the poor,
he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net.
The hapless is crushed, sinks down, and falls by his might.
He thinks in his heart, "God has forgotten,
he has hidden his face, he will never see it."

Arise, O LORD;
O God, lift up thy hand;
forget not the afflicted.

Psalm 10:3-12

"For who is God, but the Lord?
And who is a rock, except our God,
The God who girds me with strength,
And makes my way blameless?
He makes my feet like hinds' feet,
And sets me upon my high places.
He trains my hands for battle,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
Thou hast also given me the shield of Thy salvation,
And Thy right hand upholds me;
And Thy gentleness makes me great.

Lord, hear our voice, and let our cry come unto thee,
you our light and defender,
our hope and our truth.

Be with our country, and help us be the light you would have us be.

Help us through this election cycle, and may your will triumph against the darkness that would swallow us up.

Amen.

He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous are both alike an abomination to the LORD. Proverbs 17:15

Teach us, O Lord, to follow your ways, and open the eyes of those who must choose which path our country takes, and let us vote according to your will.

Thus says the LORD:
"Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,
let not the mighty man glory in his might,
let not the rich man glory in his riches;
but let him who glories glory in this,
that he understands and knows me,
that I am the LORD who practice steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth;
for in these things I delight, says the LORD."

Jeremiah 9: 23-24

Lord, help us who know your delight in integrity, honesty, justice and truth be there for you on Election Day, and stand up with those who stand for the right you would have our nation do, and choose accordingly. We ask that you let all wrongdoing regarding this election come to light, move those who vote to vote as you would have us vote, and answer your call, this day and always.

In the name of Jesus, Amen.

To: Knitting A Conundrum

This is from my morning devotional and quite appropriate:

Psalm 118

1O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his steadfast love endures for ever!

2Let Israel say,
‘His steadfast love endures for ever.’
3Let the house of Aaron say,
‘His steadfast love endures for ever.’
4Let those who fear the Lord say,
‘His steadfast love endures for ever.’

5Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.
6With the Lord on my side I do not fear.
What can mortals do to me?
7The Lord is on my side to help me;
I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
8It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to put confidence in mortals.
9It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to put confidence in princes.

10All nations surrounded me;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
11They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
12They surrounded me like bees;
they blazed* like a fire of thorns;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
13I was pushed hard,* so that I was falling,
but the Lord helped me.
14The Lord is my strength and my might;
he has become my salvation.

15There are glad songs of victory in the tents of the righteous:
‘The right hand of the Lord does valiantly;
16 the right hand of the Lord is exalted;
the right hand of the Lord does valiantly.’
17I shall not die, but I shall live,
and recount the deeds of the Lord.
18The Lord has punished me severely,
but he did not give me over to death.

19Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.

20This is the gate of the Lord;
the righteous shall enter through it.

21I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.
22The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
23This is the Lord’s doing;
it is marvellous in our eyes.
24This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.*
25Save us, we beseech you, O Lord!
O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!

26Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.*
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27The Lord is God,
and he has given us light.
Bind the festal procession with branches,
up to the horns of the altar.*

28You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God, I will extol you.

29O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.

MY COUNTRY, TIS OF THEE ...

1. My country,' tis of thee,
sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing;
land where my fathers died,
land of the pilgrims' pride,
from every mountainside let freedom ring!

2. My native country, thee,
land of the noble free, thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
thy woods and templed hills;
my heart with rapture thrills, like that above.

3. Let music swell the breeze,
and ring from all the trees sweet freedom's song;
let mortal tongues awake;
let all that breathe partake;
let rocks their silence break, the sound prolong.

4. Our fathers' God, to thee,
author of liberty, to thee we sing;
long may our land be bright
with freedom's holy light;
protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

** Please feel free to join in prayer, list your intentions and ask God's blessing on our country Election day.**

So glad you started this thread, KAC! You can count on my prayers for the coming election.

From one of your prayer posts:

"And though it looks like
we are dwelling in
the valley of the shadow of death,
where bandits hide in ambush,
and darkness shelters those
who despise the truth,
and peace seems like such a dream,
you are the lamp
who will guide our steps."

Listening to the news lately is like dwelling in the valley of death. Many big amens to all your and others prayers on this thread. As we seek the Lord, He will deliver us of all our fears.

May God's wisdom guide all those who are in places of power in our country.

"Behold, he prayeth." - Acts 9:11

Prayers are instantly noticed in heaven. The moment Saul began to pray the Lord heard him. Here is comfort for the distressed but praying soul. Oftentimes a poor broken-hearted one bends his knee, but can only utter his wailing in the language of sighs and tears; yet that groan has made all the harps of heaven thrill with music; that tear has been caught by God and treasured in the lachrymatory of heaven. "Thou puttest my tears into thy bottle," implies that they are caught as they flow. The suppliant, whose fears prevent his words, will be well understood by the Most High. He may only look up with misty eye; but "prayer is the falling of a tear." Tears are the diamonds of heaven; sighs are a part of the music of Jehovah's court, and are numbered with "the sublimest strains that reach the majesty on high." Think not that your prayer, however weak or trembling, will be unregarded. Jacob's ladder is lofty, but our prayers shall lean upon the Angel of the covenant and so climb its starry rounds. Our God not only hears prayer but also loves to hear it. "He forgetteth not the cry of the humble. " True, he regards not high looks and lofty words; he cares not for the pomp and pageantry of kings; he listens not to the swell of martial music; he regards not the triumph and pride of man; but wherever there is a heart big with sorrow, or a lip quivering with agony, or a deep groan, or a penitential sigh, the heart of Jehovah is open; he marks it down in the registry of his memory; he puts our prayers, like rose leaves, between the pages of his book of remembrance, and when the volume is opened at last, there shall be a precious fragrance springing up therefrom.

"Faith asks no signal from the skies, To show that prayers accepted rise, Our Priest is in his holy place, And answers from the throne of grace."
