Just Got Back From Seeing "Borat"
AnnaZ
Posted on 11/03/2006 2:10:47 PM PST by AnnaZ
It is vulgar, crude, offensive, and embarrassing.
That said, I haven't laughed that hard since Team America: World Police.

I've heard it's a thinly veiled attack on American conservatives. I've also seen that in the ads for the movie. Not interested in a movie that calls Americans terrorists.

Sacha Baron Cohen - star of HBOs hit comedy Da Ali G Show, takes his outrageous Kazakstani reporter character Borat to the big screen. In this hilariously offensive movie, Borat travels from his primitive home in Kazakhstan to the U.S. to make a documentary. On his cross-country road-trip, Borat meets real people in real situations.

Sounds like Michael Moore/Christopher Guest-style "populist" humor--mocking regular people for laughs while feeling oh-so-superior to them.
Even the ultraliberal Pauline Kael called out Moore on this kind of thing. I love offensive humor, but South Park takes on bigm dangerous targets--setting up real, average people who've never harmed anyone and whose only sin is that they're unhip doesn't appeal to me in the least. Sorry if that makes me unhip, but I'd rather be respectful of people who've never hurt me just because I choose to live a life different from theirs.

I found the puppet-sex scene in Team America quite shocking! The uncut DVD is particularly gruesome in that regard. It's still bloody hilarious.

I've heard it's a thinly veiled attack on American conservatives. It is, a little. It's also a little embarrassing, because these are real people, not made-up characters.
*sigh*
If one is sensitive to that, I'd stay clear of it.
But it's still a laugh-riot.
(Then again, I don't get out much...)
