Sad, Cruel Beagle Killing
Big Buck Zone ^ | 02 November 2006 | Mike Hanback

Beagle One of the saddest, cruelest stories I’ve heard in a while.

Larry Nahay and a few buddies went rabbit hunting in Westmoreland County, PA, one day last week. Nahay cut loose his 3 prized beagles and off they went.  The little dogs soon caught the scent of their game and took off baying, filling the valley with that sweet hunting dog music.

Then the hunters heard a shot…and another…and five more.  Nahay’s dogs went quiet so he took off running up the hill, calling their names, "Millie! Maddy! Minnie!"

He found the little gals dead, lying next to each other in a pool of blood.

"Whoever did this murdered them. He slaughtered them. They were shot at point-blank range," Nahay told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

No way the killer felt threatened by Millie and the others. "They were friendly," Nahay told the newspaper. "They were used to being around people. Heck, they don't even come up to the middle of your shins."

What the hell is wrong with people these days? Who could have a cold enough heart to shoot 3 beagles in cold blood? If any of you PA ZONERS hear anything about this sick crime call the PA State Police or local Westmoreland Co. authorities and bring this killer to justice.

Probably teens out hunting and having no luck. One of them will get stupid and brag, and eventually names will get out.

Yeah, well, I don't know how sad the story sounds to someone who's been menaced by an unleashed dog standing on his porch growling first thing in the morning.

Caused me to be so late for work, they told me not to bother showing up.

Although in my case, it wasn't a beagle... it was one of them weiner dogs.

Were they on their owner's land, public land or land he had permission on which to rabbit hunt? If they were shot point blank as he thinks, and he only had to run up a hill to get to them shortly after being shot, it's surprising he didn't catch glimpse of the shooters, or at least hear them moving away. Just wondering about more detail.

I think this is an old story. It happened back in october just down the road from where I live. Police caught the shooter, who claimed the dogs were chasing deer.

The case is still pending.

If this is a new case, I have not heard of it.

You couldn't outsmart a dumb dog?

(Dachshund are not the brightest dogs in the world. IIRC, they're ranked about 50th in the dog intelligence rankings.)

Larry Nahay and a few buddies went rabbit hunting in Westmoreland County, PA, one day last week.

This is a sad, even tragic story. However, for those of you not familiar with Pennsylvania Game Laws, if Mr. Nahay was hunting rabbits with dogs last week, he was hunting them out-of-season, as the second rabbit season started this past Monday, the 11th (two days ago).

If he was hunting with dogs last week, he was in the second week of regular deer season. If the dogs were out of his sight, they may have been chasing deer. If a deer hunter in Pennsylvania sees a dog chasing a deer, that dog is considered a "nuisance animal" and can be shot on sight. (Ref. Chapter 23, subchapter E, Dogs Pursuing Game or Wildlife

"Sec. 2384. Declaring dogs public nuisances.

Any dog pursuing or following upon the track of any big game animal in such close pursuit as to endanger the big game animal or to be in the act of attacking the big game animal at any time is hereby declared to be a public nuisance and may be destroyed as provided in this title. "

This is a very touchy subject, as one might imagine, and a tragedy for the dog owner.

Heart wrenching as I consider dogs family members. I lost the best German short hair and walker/blue tick in a similar manner but the killer's name has yet to surface. I'm afraid to this day how I will respond and its been 8 years.

If a deer hunter killed these beagles, he can personally take responsibility with all the other slob hunters that contribute to what will be the end (prohibition) of ALL hunting someday.

Chances are these beagles had collars. And chances are, a deer hunter would be smart enough to know the rabbit hunter would be along shortly, and he could talk to rabbit hunter about the problem of them chasing deer.

Before you think I am an AR fanatic -- I am as PRO hunting as one can get, and I hunt. Even though the slob hunter may be legally safe, his attitude sucks, and gives lots of ammunition to the non-hunting public, as well as AR fanatics.

Here in the state where I live there is a deer hunting website I used to frequent. There is a core group in there who brag about shooting people's dogs if they even WALK under (around) their treestand (not chasing deer). If my dog ever disappears I will go on there and find the perpetrator, because idiots like this are too stupid not to brag about it.

I'd be willing to bet the beagles were on a rabbit, and IF a deer hunter killed them he is not what I would call an ethical hunter.

Of course, there could be more to the story, like prior conflicts with these hunters, etc. But shooting these dogs was an ignorant thing to do.
