Yeah, I know it is April Fools Day but I am NOT kidding about my proposal that the state of Florida have a state song contest. Apparently, the governor and several legislators want to change the current state song, Way Down Upon The Swanee River (Old Folks At Home) to a song with lyrics less politically un-PC since the song was written by Stephen Foster in a somewhat less enlightened era. Also the current state song sort of reflects (in tune and lyrics) a Florida that was slower paced. The current state song was adopted when Florida had the smallest state population east of the Mississippi.
Therefore I am proposing that the Governor Crist announce a Florida State Song Contest. Anybody can enter. Prize money for the winning entry to be supplied by the tourist industry. BTW, this song contest would be GREAT publicity for Florida.
To kick off this contest, I propose that Freepers get it into gear by providing a new Florida State song. Remember to let us know what tune the words lyrics will be sung to.
Florida's State Song ping.
Pinging the Florida Ping List pingers.
That is FABULOUS! You should send that to Jeb, or a radio station.
Well at least in Gainesville it should be, "We Are the Champions!"
It is amazing that with maybe thousands of entries, just one good song by a professional songwriter (and singer) easily surpassed all the others.
LOL...that works too.
