A guide to using HTML on Free Republic in 5 lines

When I came to Free Republic I had never used HTML. All the guides seemed complicated. This is a guide where I try to keep it as short as possible to cover the most needed topics. There are many better and more complete guides. I'll link to a couple at the end.

1. Free Republic uses HTML where formatting is enclosed in “less than” and “greater than” signs like this <bold> </bold>unlike many boards that use brackets like this [bold] [/bold].

2. The first one starts the command and the second one (with the divided by sign) ends the formatting like this < b > Text < /b >

   As soon as you use one HTML command in your post the Free Republic editor assumes you are doing all the formatting so you need to add you own line breaks and blank lines. Use the <br> command once for a line break, or twice (like this <br><br>) for one blank line, three times for two blank lines and so on.

3. To insert a clickable link: <a href=www.linkadress.com>Link description</a>

4. To insert a picture <img src=”www.linkadress.com/picturename.jpg”>

Ahhh! Now I get it. I hardly ever go to the FR Home page.

If you'd like to do as you descrivbe, do the following steps.

1. Go to the FR Home page.
2. Find the badge graphic and right click on it.
3. Select "Properties" from the context menu that pops up.
4. Copy the information listed next to "Location" (If you are using Firefox) or "Address" (If you are using Internet Explorer). (Either way, the location of the graphic is "http://www.freerepublic.com/images/Pajama_Patrol.jpg")
5. You next need to use this info to configure a clickable link on your profile page. Essentially you are using the graphics location as the 'clickable' info imbedded within a reference to a link to the FR Homepage. So the code you need to place on your profile page will look exactly like this:

And the final result will look like this and will take you to the FR Homepage when clicked:

It also helps to have a reason to practice. Freep provided that reason.

How to post an image:

Here's an example. Copy and paste the line below into a reply and see what happens:

That particular photo's size is 672 pixels wide by 462 pixels high. You can get that info by right-clicking your mouse on the image and selecting "properties" from that menu. There are a couple other useful parameters you add to the <IMG> tag: WIDTH and HEIGHT. If the image you want to post is too large you can reduce its size by addng either WIDTH or HEIGHT or both. Let's keep it simple. You want to reduce the image to approximately half the size. Just add width=336 inside the line above.

The browser will automatically calculate the appropriate height for the image to maintain proportionality. Try it.

<p> creates a new paragraph and is a little easier.

All markup commands are case-insensitive, so <br> is the same as <BR>

There are some special sequences needed to print certain characters properly:

• &amp; prints an ampersand (&)
• &gt; prints a "greater than" sign (>)
• &lt; prints a "less than" sign (<)
• &reg; prints a "registered trademark" sign (®)
• &trade; prints a "trademark" sign (™)
