“Lord Browne, 59, resigned on Tuesday hours after a judge allowed the Mail on Sunday to publish allegations by Mr Jeff Chevalier, with whom he had a four-year relationship, that he misused the petroleum giant’s resources... he acknowledged on Tuesday that he had lied to a High Court judge about how he met Mr Chevalier, a 27-year-old student. Lord Browne had earlier claimed that he met the Canadian by chance while jogging in a park. In fact, the two men made contact through a male escort agency’s website... During the hearings, the court was told that Lord Browne took steps to enable Mr Chevalier to remain in the UK when his visa was due to run out. This included helping the younger man to set up a company to trade in mobile phone ring tones... High Court judge, Mr Justice Eady, also noted that Lord Browne tried to ‘trash’ the reputation of Mr Chevalier by suggesting that ‘he is a liar, unstable and adversely affected by dependence on alcohol and illegal drugs.’”
