Bill Nye, the harmless children's edu-tainer known as "The Science Guy," managed to offend a select group of adults in Waco, Texas at a presentation, when he suggested that the moon does not emit light, but instead reflects the light of the sun.
As even most elementary-school graduates know, the moon reflects the light of the sun but produces no light of its own.
But don't tell that to the good people of Waco, who were "visibly angered by what some perceived as irreverence," according to the Waco Tribune.
Nye was in town to participate in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series. He gave two lectures on such unfunny and adult topics as global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption.
But nothing got people as riled as when he brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars."
The lesser light, he pointed out, is not a light at all, but only a reflector.
At this point, several people in the audience stormed out in fury. One woman yelled "We believe in God!" and left with three children, thus ensuring that people across America would read about the incident and conclude that Waco is as nutty as they'd always suspected.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Even a reflection is light. It is just not the source. The Bible is still correct, these angry people are not.
Is this for real? :p
Bet there’s more to the story.
Some times I just close my eyes and shake my head.
flag
How do they not know that the sunlight bounces off the moon?
How do they think a lunar eclipse occurs?
God must shake his head in wonderment.
See # 8!
This came from bsalert.com? Well that sounds pretty accurate. I don’t buy this story for a second.
I bet they think moonbats were created by God, too.
Face it, some people are just idiots.
Flag on the moon!
(A quarter to anyone who catches THAT reference.)
Ya think?
” (A quarter to anyone who catches THAT reference.) “
Hey — I know somebody who knows somebody who knows somebody who is distantly related to somebody who knows somebody who was at the funeral of somebody who actually visited that sound stage in Arizona....
Proof enough for me......
Nope. Hint: It’s a movie reference. And I don’t mean Capricorn One. =)
Ignorance is Bliss.
To those people - Ignorance is also a Blister (on their backsides).
If you don’t use the brain God gave you, you get everything you deserve.
Isn't the consensus that the Lunar Module would have blown down the flag from Apollo 11 when it took off from the lunar surface?
In the movie Independence Day, don't they show the flag still standing?
The Moon could be still seen as a light--light comes to Earth from the Moon, even if the light originated in the Sun.
Are the rovers that just landed going to take a photo of the flag the astronauts planted in the 60’s?
Some moonbat congressperson.
I believe the moon reflects the sun. I also believe that this story is a fabrication.
BSAlert has no link, and the newpaper apparently earlier linked took the story down.
Doncha think it MIGHT be that the paper realized it has published something incredibly wrong? Occams Razor and all that, it sure seems more likely that a paper printed some BS story, then took it down than the entire town of Waco turned out to hear Bill Nye, then booed when he “suggested” that the moon didn’t emit light.
Do you really think people who are that backward in their thinking would make a point to go hear Bill Nye lecture?
Nah. Until I hear a first hand withness, this is BS.
I know someone who actually believes we never went to the moon. Everyone tells him he may be right. This guy is in his thirties. Telling him otherwise is like getting in a name calling argument with a third grader.
If you look at the bsalert.com website, it sure seems like a left-wing political website, and part of the left wing’s strategy has always been to ridicule their opponents.
Nope.
Wow, am I the ONLY Mystery Science Theater 3000 watcher here? =O
LOL
I guess I shouldn't have picked such an obscure reference...
Woman, why did you go to the presentation of "Bill Nye, The Science Guy"? You're not going to get a sermon there.
The reminds me of the old joke about a Southern Politician stumping through a small town in a Southern State: "My opponent is a Homo sapien and his wife is a Thesbian."
Folks, look at the source of the story: BS Alert.
I was selling an elementary social studies text, and was accused of trying to teach evolution because of a picture of ancient drawings on a cave wall.
I had to cheat, but

I used to love MST3000, but it was RARELY on when I could watch it, and it seems to lose something watching it on tape during the day.
If this story is true, these people do not represent the mainstream of the conservative movement, the Republican Party, or the state of Texas.
I sincerely hope this story is made up. BTW, it’s been posted on DU and the twerps there are having a field day.
Don W = Super Genius!
This show MUST be watched at night. I never saw it in its original airing, but that must have been great--there's something about the imagined mass viewing experience across the country that would add so much to these.
I have the entire run on DVD-R and this episode is perhaps one of my favorites. It's so incredibly incompetent that the guys have tons to comment on. Oddly, though, most people I've shown this to don't care for it.
I find it fascinating...at night, of course. (The short subjects preceeding it are fine, too, especially the one about Ben Frankling giving financial advice to some skinny kid.)
Flag on the moon!
I wonder if this woman was wearing a burka. As I recall, the moon is central to the Mooselum religion. Making it dependent on the sun which is often associated with the Christian religion. I’ll find some moon references later when I’m more awake. Hey, it’s Saturday morning.

Like I said, the DUmmies are cheering over this.
Good old Texas knuckle-draggers.
I’ve done some searching and found this story posted all over various political websites and blogs, both rightist and leftist. But there doesn’t seem to be any other source than this BSalert. Has anyone seen any other news sites that have this story?
Too much Capricorn 1.
Sheesh!
A quick Google search of “Bill Nye moon Waco” turns up hundreds of links which reference the article in the Waco Tribune Herald. There seems little doubt that the article did actually appear in that newspaper. The accuracy of the story itself is another matter, although I see no reason to doubt it offhand.
GOD made it all and can call reflected light “lesser light” if HE wants to... he holds the patent!

Things like “science” and “facts” totally piss me off.
