The DARPA Urban Challenge is an autonomous vehicle research and development program with the goal of developing technology that will keep warfighters off the battlefield and out of harms way. The Urban Challenge features autonomous ground vehicles maneuvering in a mock city environment, executing simulated military supply missions while merging into moving traffic, navigating traffic circles, negotiating busy intersections, and avoiding obstacles.
The entire final event will be covered in a professionally hosted webcast starting at 6:30 AM PT on November 3 that will feature views of the competition from a variety of positions. Two event websites www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge and www.grandchallenge.org will have regularly updated content on the competition and will serve as portals to the final event webcast.
From October 26-31, vehicles will be evaluated on their ability to operate with live traffic. Vehicles will attempt to make safe left turns across moving traffic, and pull out at T-intersections with cars arriving from both directions. In other tests, vehicles will follow narrow winding roads, avoiding parked cars and other obstructions. Vehicles must also maneuver into a designated parking spot, and negotiate 4-way intersections and road-blocks.
To watch the November 3 final event online, visit our live webcast at www.grandchallenge.org , starting at 6 am PT.
THANK YOU for posting this.
... now I just have to stay awake another 6 hours.
Uh, today is October 27th, and the webcast is on November 3rd. I think you’ll have to stay awake a tad longer than 6 hours...
Al Gore invented DARPA too, so this is election-2008-relevant. ;’)
