Republicans and Democrats slammed John McCain yesterday for not slamming a South Carolina supporter who called Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton a "bitch" to his face.
"I think it's a huge mistake for us to show that kind of disrespect to any candidate," said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC).
"We can't encourage this kind of behavior. We certainly don't need to get personal."
The Clinton camp declined to comment.
McCain, a practitioner of "straight talk" on the campaign trail, was caught off guard when a woman asked him at a campaign event, "How do we beat the bitch?"
After laughing and covering his face, McCain responded, "May I give the translation."
It didn't take long for him to understand whom the supporter was referring to.
"That's an excellent question," he said. "I respect Sen. Clinton."
McCain then talked about how he was beating Clinton by 3 points in a recent poll.
The event was caught on camera and posted on YouTube and other Web sites.
"Oh, Jiminy," said Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) about McCain's dilemma. "I think I'd say: 'Next question.' "
Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Westchester), a key Clinton backer, called McCain's comments "inappropriate."
"It was unfortunate in my judgment that John McCain wasn't direct in saying, 'Your comment wasn't appropriate, next question.' "
McCain didn't backtrack.
He told bloggers in a conference call, "You would think I was guilty of this behavior, when, in fact, I said that I respect Sen. Clinton. I have an excellent relationship with Sen. Clinton."
His campaign slammed a CNN correspondent who reported on the story, and McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, sent out an e-mail fund-raising appeal....
"Well, friends, we are on a comeback. We are the only campaign that can defeat Hillary Clinton, and CNN knows it."...

Maybe Dems can't take the heat.
Nevermind Bush, Rove and Petreaus.
I thought the truth was the best defense....
How can they possibly complain about this? Isn't his just one of the libs favorite techniques? "Speaking truth to power."
This is the most publicity McCain’s had in weeks.
And he said he had the “utmost respect” for Sen. Clinton. Is he now responsible for the questions people ask? Unless she was a plant and asked by his staffers to ask the question.
Wait a minute...where have I heard that idea before?
McCain wasn’t bitch slapped, Hillary was bitch slapped. A woman stood up and said this about the Hildebeast and why should John McCain rebuke her, she has a right to her free speech and opinion. Nobody not even the MSM rebukes those that call George Bush a liar, say Tim Russert should be shot, say Clarence Thomas should eat more fattening foods and die or Hillary calling Dick Cheney “Darth Vader”. It’s the same old crap you get out of whining liberal Democrats. Rules and manners only apply to one side.
But she is a bitch, the quintessential bitch.
The correct response isn't "With a crowbar"?
Hillary objects to that term.
She prefers to be called a “Beeyotch”. (”Ya’ll KNOW what ahm talkin’ ‘bout.”)
In the video he covers his face after the man in the back says “I thought she was talking about my ex wife”
.
Its OK to call the President of the United States an idiot, a loser, a murderer, a liar, etc... but please do not upset the delicate genius Hillary!! (needed 2 exclamation points!)
“Its OK to call the President of the United States an idiot, a loser, a murderer, a liar, etc... but please do not upset the delicate genius Hillary!! (needed 2 exclamation points!)”
Allow me to just add that at many of the demonstrations where prominent Democrats, including Hillary, have appeared and spoken, nothing was said about MUCH MUCH WORSE vile words, death threats, nazi comparisons, Bush with Hitler mustache and swastika armband, etc., etc., etc. Now they’re outraged? Now Jim DeMint speaks out? Give me a freakin’ break!
There may be a method to his “madness”. What person wants to vote for a President who has to be defended every time someone says something the slightest bit off-color about them?
By standing up for Hillary, they plant that Hillary needs someone to defend her.
BTW, we can’t take this lightly. This is an attempt to “macaca” John McCain, only in this case it isn’t even something HE said.
IF they get away with this, after they got away with it last year with Allen, we’ll spend the rest of our life watching our candidates get shot down because of some minor inflection or less-than-perfect response to common ordinary events.
When Whoopie Goldberg was schtumping for John Kerry, didn’t she call George Bush every vile thing she could think of, including referring to Bush as, er, nether region hair? Did John Kerry condemn her for said comments? Did anyone even raise an eyebrow?
Dems are the biggest freakin’ hypocrites around!
Poor McCain - his sin was to laugh when he heard the woman....which is what all those there at the time did. It WAS funny. After he composed himself....he stated a couple of times that he respected Senator Clinton......and he then proceded to answer the question.
McCain did nothing wrong. The media has turned on him......much like he turned on us with McCain Feingold and amnesty. In any case, I find McCain light entertainment during this election. I liked his hit on Hillary about Woodstock and several other instances when he was dead on. Too bad his history does not make him a serious contender for me. He has a certain gravitas I like. Not enough to overcome his liberal agenda though. I am conservative to the core.
I do hope he can support and campaign for the nominee in the general election. He could do some good there.
