Cat warns of carbon monoxide

CEDAR RAPIDS - As the weather turned cold in the past two weeks and Jeanie Probst started using the heater more often, her cat Oreo started to act crazy.

In retrospect, she and her boyfriend, Chris Ward, say they'd been getting headaches and losing energy. And they chalk their cat's strangeness up to him sensing that the apartment's furnace was pumping carbon monoxide into the apartment.

"He came out here yelling," Probst said.

Oreo would run in circles under the vent or jump onto the back of a chair, stare at the register, "and start making a real loud meowing noise," she said. "It was one of those scary meows."

After the heat kicked off, the cat would relax.

Ward, 37, and Probst, 32, both of 3639 12th Ave. SW, think somehow their black-and-white, 1 1/2-year-old cat — they have one other cat and a small dog — noticed the carbon monoxide.

They called MidAmerican Energy, and sure enough, their furnace was pumping out the poisonous gas. On Tuesday, a technician from Colony Heating fixed the furnace, Probst said.

Probst said she felt great when she woke up Tuesday morning after turning off the heat the previous night, though she was a little cold.

Oreo hasn't acted up since.

"He's way different now," Ward said.

I think this is the problem for that other cat, the one who has to be picked up each day, a mile and a half from home.
