LONDON, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- British researchers warn environmentally friendly, energy-saving, light bulbs could cause skin cancer and trigger migraines.
The bulbs' light, which is more intense than traditional incandescent bulbs, also can exacerbate eczema and other skin problems, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.
An estimated 340,000 people could be harmed if the British government phases out incandescent bulbs by 2011, as planned, without allowances for light-sensitive medical conditions, warned the British Association of Dermatologists and the Migraine Action Association.
"The government simply must allow incandescent light bulbs to be available to these people, their families, friends and employers, and at a fair price," said Dr. Colin Holden, president of the dermatologists' association.
I've heard that they can trigger attacks of fibromyalgia in sufferers of that syndrome.
-or- You must give up your health for the greater good. We insist!
Save the planet - kill off all the humans.
~~Anthropogenic Global Warming ping~~
I can envision the day when we will have to have our curtains drawn at light because inspectors or tattletales will snitch on anyone using an incandescent bulb. ;(
I guess that they are talking about CF bulbs. Try the LED bulbs (added bonus is no mercury).
I love my Ott lights, especially in the winter. ;-D
Those things are great! I really like the portable units.
LOL ... me too ... I have three of those ... one of the most useful things I ever bought. ;)
In my home town in CA, people are encouraged to "rat out" their neighbors who use their fireplaces when it isn't an "approved burn day".
With our society's ever-increasing embrace of nanny-statism, I could see your scenario becoming reality.
For me, they DO trigger migraines. Not a laughing matter.
Florescent bulbs indoors do not bother me but the very bright white lights in car headlights especially Mercedes and BMW’s absolutely blind me. I am sorry to say I am seeing more and more of them.
The regular florescent tube lights used to give me headaches. I don't know about the CFLs.
Get used to it. HIDs are appearing in in-home fixtures and in streetlights.
They’re cheaper to run, last a stupidly long amount of time and take less power (important in vehicles). In addition, they have a much better color spectrum than halogens.
By the way, their actual measured brightness isn’t that much higher than a halogen. It’s the output spectrum that some people are sensitive to. It’s the same claim that people made when cars went from incandescents (useless at night) to halogens (”they’re blinding, argh!”).
The other thing is that the Europeans actually have a better legal beam pattern with a sharp vertical cutoff to avoid blinding others. While US HID cars are required to have self-levelling headlight systems to avoid blinding other drivers when coming over hills, the DOT-mandated headlight beam pattern requires a fuzzy diffuse vertical cutoff that can and does blind others.
And who got the DOT to mandate that? The Dems and the Big Three who couldn’t compete back in the 60s - yup, this is a leftover anti-compete measure.
Well, well, well!
My wife isn’t nuts, after all. Vindicated.
As for myself, I just simply do not like the damned things esthectically...read, “I do not want to have to change 6 wall sconces to new fixtures that can accomodate the damned things.”
Watt’s the problem?
