Woman, 89, uses ax to break into home
Wed Feb 13, 1:28 AM ET
DURANGO, Colo. - An 89-year-old woman used an ax to break into her own home after she locked herself out on a patio hemmed in by deep snow. "I had to bang the glass four times with the ax before it broke," said Geraldine "Gerry" Palmer, who turns 90 this weekend.
Palmer said a sliding glass door locked behind her Saturday after she went outside to rearrange some things that had gotten wet on the patio. Snow sliding off the patio roof had formed a pile about 7 feet high between her and the yard, so she had no escape.
About 6 feet of snow has fallen on Durango this winter, the National Weather Service said.
"The ax was there for several years to chop wood, but I no longer use a wood stove," Palmer said.

I like old people. They have common sense. No wandering off seeking help in this case. Kudos!!
Yep, she took care of the problem herself, and she didn’t even have to axe anybody for help.
FEET...over a dozen feet total in places - Silverton is really getting socked this winter where homeowners can't shovel snow off some roofs, because the snow is piled too high around the house now!
Story says she no longer has a wood stove. Whats with the rick of wood behind her in the picture?
I'll bet she's got her canning jars from the 30's...and still cans!
“Heeeeeeeeere’s Gerry!”
My grandma was like that too. LOL
The best day at their house...When I slept in a "feather" bed. Oh, God...Awesome!!
My grandma, who died in 2003 at age 89, only got rid of her wood stove when my dad and his siblings made her.
And even then it ended up out in the barn. My dad has it now.
The breakfasts she used to make on that thing when I was a young boy! Homemade biscuits, country ham, grits with redeye gravy....drool.
Thanks. She looks good for 90.
